Worship – February 24, 2013

Call to Worship
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
And the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

See, darkness covers the earth
And thick darkness is over the peoples,

But the LORD rises upon you,
And his glory appears over you.

Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your dawn.

—Isaiah 60:1-3 (NIV, 1984)

Prayer of Confession
‘Search us, O God, and know our heart;
Test us and know our anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in us.
And lead us in the way everlasting.’
Forgive our sins and make right our ways.
Find us where we hide.
Repair our broken relationships.
Free us from false guilt.
And enable us to walk in hope and peace,
Until you make all things new.
Through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Jesus Died My Soul To Save
I stand amazed at your love for me
That lonely night in Gethsemane
This sinner’s heart can’t help but thrill
To hear you pray, ‘Father, not my will’

What depth of love, what reach of grace
Oh, how my grateful heart now aches
To sing it louder, the refrain
Jesus died, my soul to save

Atonement full applied to me
The blood that spilled at Calvary
Has swallowed all my sin and shame
I’m reconciled in Jesus’ name

What depth of love, what reach of grace
Oh, how my grateful heart now aches
To sing it louder, the refrain
Jesus died, my soul to save

Oh, such pleasure, oh, such pain
The Father’s wrath and fury laid
On Christ whom saints and angels praise
Jesus died, my soul to save

Come you broken, bound by sin
And let your weary journey end
Come and lay your burdens down
Where mercy rules and peace abounds

What depth of love, what reach of grace
Oh, how my grateful heart now aches
To sing it louder, the refrain
Jesus died, my soul to save
Jesus died, my soul to save

Profession of Faith
What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things and still upholds them by His providence?

We can be patient in adversity, thankful in prosperity, and with a view to the future we can have a firm confidence in our faithful God and Father that no creature shall separate us from His love; for all creatures are so completely in His hand that without His will they cannot so much as move.

—from The Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 28

Worship – February 17, 2013

Call to Worship
Sing to the LORD a new song;
Sing to the LORD, all the earth.

Sing to the LORD, praise his name;
Proclaim his salvation day after day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

His marvelous deeds among all peoples

—Psalm 96:1-3 (NIV, 1984)

Prayer of Confession
Good and Holy God,
Have mercy on us.
Forgive and cleanse us from our sins.
We believe.  Help our unbelief.
When we cannot see, we struggle to believe.
Our failure to understand often leads to fear.
Where our faith is weak, be our strength.
Until you make all things clear,
Guide our steps, in the light and the dark.
Give us hearts that trust and rely in you Alone.
Through Jesus. Amen.

O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, bound-less, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward to thy glorious rest above!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread his praise from shore to shore!
How he loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, never more!
How he watches o’er his loved ones, died to call them all his own;
How for them he intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!
’Tis an ocean vast of blessing, ’tis a haven sweet of rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, ’tis a heaven of heavens to me;
And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee!

The Church’s One Foundation
The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is his new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her and for her life he died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

’Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;
Till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest,
And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won,
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we,
Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Hebrews 11:1-2, 6, 16b

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God,
for he has prepared a city for them.

How Great Is Our God
The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice
He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Age to age he stands, and time is in his Hands
Beginning and the End, Beginning and the End
The Godhead, three in one, Father, Spirit, Son
The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Name above all names, worthy of all praise
My heart will sing how great is our God

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee
How great thou art! How great thou art!

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Sermon
Believing Something About Jesus — Knowing But Not Seeing
Genesis 22:1-19

The Lord’s Supper — Come Boldly To the Throne of Grace
Come boldly to a throne of grace,
Ye wretched sinners come;
And lay your load at Jesus’ feet,
And plead what he has done.

“How can I come?” Some soul may say,
“I’m lame and cannot walk;
My guilt and sin have stopped my mouth;
I sigh, but dare not talk.”

Come boldly to the throne of grace,
Though lost, and blind, and lame;
Jehovah is the sinner’s Friend,
And ever was the same.

He makes the dead to hear his voice;
He makes the blind to see;
The sinner lost he came to save,
And set the prisoner free.

Come boldly to the throne of grace,
For Jesus fills the throne;
And those he kills he makes alive;
He hears the sigh or groan.

Poor bankrupt souls, who feel and know
The hell of sin within,
Come boldly to the throne of grace;
The Lord will take you in.
Take you in….

Worship – February 10, 2013

Call to Worship
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more
Than all we ask or imagine, according to his power
That is at work within us…

To him be glory in the church
And in Christ Jesus throughout all generations,
For ever and ever!  Amen.

—Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV, 1984)

Prayer of Confession
Father, Forgive our sins.  They are many.
Be merciful though we deserve judgment.
Receive our praise, imperfect as it is.
We thank you for the atoning work of Jesus Christ,
Who suffered and died for us.
Take our own suffering,
And redeem it as an offering of grace and peace,
For a world broken by sin and sadness.
Give us strength we don’t possess,
To make us light in darkness,
Comfort in sadness,
And a healing presence among the wounded.
Through Jesus Christ. Amen.

And Can it Be
And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be that Thou, my God, should die for me?

refrain
Amazing love! How can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me? (repeat)

He left his Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace!,
Emptied Himself of all but love And bled for Adam’s helpless race.
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free! For, O my God it found out me!  (refrain)

Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth and followed Thee.  (refrain)

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own. (refrain)

King of Glory
Lift up your gaze, be lifted up
Tell everyone how great the love
The love come down from heaven’s gate
To kiss the earth with hope and grace

Sing, Who is this King of Glory?
The Lord strong and mighty
Who is the King of Glory?
The Lord strong and mighty

Lift up your hands, be lifted up
Let the redeemed declare the love
We bow down at heaven’s gate
To kiss the feet of hope and grace

Sing, Who is this King of Glory?
The Lord strong and mighty
Who is the King of Glory?
The Lord strong and mighty

There is one God, He is holy
There is one Lord over everything
There is one King, He is Jesus
King of Glory, strong and mighty

You are the King of Glory.
The Lord the strong and mighty
You are the King of Glory.
The Lord strong and mighty

Gifts — I Boast No More
No more my God I boast no more
Of all the duties I have done
I quit the hopes I held before
To trust the merits of Thy Son

No more my God
No more my God
No more my God
I boast no more

Now for the loss I bear His name
What was my gain I count my loss
My former pride I call my shame
And nail my glory to His cross

No more my God
No more my God
No more my God
I boast no more

Yes and I must I will esteem All things but loss for Jesus’ sake
Oh may my soul be found in Him And of His righteousness partake
Amen, amen

The best obedience of my hands
Dares not appear before Thy throne
But faith can answer Thy demands
By pleading what my Lord has done

No more my God
No more my God
No more my God
I boast no more

A Confession of Faith
We believe in Jesus Christ
Who was of David’s line, born of Mary,
Who was truly born, ate and drank;
Was truly persecuted under Pontius Pilate,
Truly crucified and died while those in heaven,
On earth, and under the earth beheld it;
Who also was truly raised from the dead,
The Father having raised him,
Who in like manner will raise us also who believe in him –
His Father, I say, will raise us in Christ Jesus,
Apart from whom we have not true life.

—Ignatius of Antioch, 110 AD

Call to Worship
On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them
From sin and impurity.

Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,

And strength and honor and glory and praise!

Prayer of Confession
Take our Hearts, Father,
And prepare them for your Feast.
Forgive our sins.
Purify our thoughts and motives.
Cause the body and blood of Christ,
To break us, and to pour us out,
To those we love and see daily,
And into the world,
As a Feast to the Hungry,
And a Wellspring to the parched.
Through Jesus, our Lord and King. Amen.

O for a Thousand Tongues
O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of His grace.

Jesus, the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease,
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ‘tis life and health and peace.

He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He sets the prisoners free,
His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me.

He speaks and, listening to His voice, new life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe.

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad the honors of Thy name.

GiftsEarly My God
Early my God without delay
I haste to seek Your face
My thirsty spirit faints away
Without Your cheering grace

My spirit toils with this life’s gloom
And fights to stay the course
Remind me of that heavenly hour
When You called me Yours

Early my God without delay
Before tomorrow’s dawn
Let trumpets sound the victory tune
Because You have returned

Not life itself with all her joys
Will tempt my spirit move
My make and my helping hand
All I need is You

A Confession of Faith
Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended to heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

—based on Apostles’ Creed

*‘Catholic’ is the historic word meaning ‘universal’ – it therefore refers to the entirety of believers throughout history.

Nothing But The Blood
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

refrain
Oh! precious is the flow that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see, nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea, nothing but the blood of Jesus. (refrain)

Nothing can for sin atone, nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done, nothing but the blood of Jesus. (refrain)

This is all my hope and peace, nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness, nothing but the blood of Jesus. (refrain)

Believing Something About Jesus —The Thing We Don’t Have to Know
Hebrews 11:23-28

CommunionHark! The Voice of Love and Mercy
Hark! the voice of love and mercy
Sounds aloud from Calvary;
See, it rends the rocks asunder,
Shakes the earth, and veils the sky:
“It is finished!” “It is finished!”
Hear the dying Savior cry.

“It is finished!” O what pleasure
Do these precious words afford;
Heavenly blessings, without measure,
Flow to us from Christ the Lord:
“It is finished!” “It is finished!”
Saints the dying words record.

Finished all the types and shadows
Of the ceremonial law;
Finished all that God had promised;
Death and hell no more shall awe:
“It is finished!” “It is finished!”
“It is finished!” Saints, from hence your comfort draw;
Saints, from hence your comfort draw.

Happy souls, approach the table,
Taste the soul reviving food;
Nothing half so sweet and pleasant
As the Savior’s flesh and blood,
“It is finished! It is finished!”
Christ has borne the heavy load.

Tune your harps anew, ye seraphs,
Join to sing the glorious theme;
Saints on earth, and all in heaven,
Join to praise Immanuel’s Name;
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Glory to the bleeding Lamb!
