Worship – April 28, 2013

Call to Worship
But I will sing of your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.

You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.

—Psalm 59:16-17, (NIV)

Prayer of Confession
O God, you have searched us and you know us.
Purify our hearts.
Expose our motives and intentions.
Reveal our sin and dark thoughts.
Forgive, cleanse, and restore us through Jesus.
Give us hearts of faith.
Help us to follow you, and to obey your voice.
Where we have been prideful, humble us.
Where we have been unforgiving, soften our hearts.
Where we have slumbered spiritually, awaken us.
Where we have been indifferent, convict us to action.
Cause your Spirit to fill us.
And as we are filled,
Help us to bear the fruit of your presence and peace.
Through Jesus. Amen.

Come Christians Join to Sing
Come, Christians, join to sing
Alleluia! Amen!
Loud praise to Christ our King
Alleluia! Amen!

Let all, with heart and voice
Before his throne rejoice
Praise is his gracious choice
Alleluia! Amen!

Come, lift your hearts on high
Alleluia! Amen!
Let praises fill the sky
Alleluia! Amen!

He is our Guide and Friend
To us he’ll condescend
His love shall never end
Alleluia! Amen!

Praise yet our Christ again
Alleluia! Amen!
Life shall not end the strain
Alleluia! Amen!

On heaven’s blissful shore
His goodness we’ll adore
Singing forevermore
Alleluia! Amen!

Enough
All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

You are my supply, my breath of life
Still more awesome than I know
You are my reward, worth living for
Still more awesome than I know

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

You’re my sacrifice of greatest price
Still more awesome than I know
You’re my coming King, you are ev’rything
Still more awesome than I know

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you…

More than all I want
More than all I need
You are more than enough for me

More than all I know
More than all I can say
You are more than enough

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

Confession of Faith
We are justified “freely” or “by grace”
through redemption in Jesus Christ.
And therefore we cling to this foundation,
which is firm forever,
giving all glory to God,
humbling ourselves,
and recognizing ourselves as we are;
not claiming a thing for ourselves or our merits
and leaning and resting on the sole obedience of Christ crucified,
which is ours when we believe in him.

—based on Belgic Confession, Art. 23

Just As I Am
Just as I am, without one plea
But that thy blood was shed for me
And that thou bidst me come to thee
O Lamb of God, I come, I come

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot
To thee whose blood can cleanse each spot
O Lamb of God, I come, I come

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many conflicts, many doubts
Fightings and fears within, without
O Lamb of God, I come, I come

Just as I am, thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down
Now, to be thine, yea thine alone
O Lamb of God, I come, I come

Wonderful Merciful Savior
You are the one that we praise
You are the one we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
O, our hearts always hunger for

Wonderful, merciful Savior
Precious Redeemer and Friend
Who would have thought that a Lamb
Could rescue the souls of men
O, you rescue the souls of men

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper
Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts
Have hopelessly lost the way
O, we hopelessly lost the way

You are the one that we praise
You are the one we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
O, our hearts always hunger for

Almighty, infinite Father
Faithfully loving your own
Here, in our weakness, you find us
Falling before your throne
O, we’re falling before your throne

You are the one that we praise
You are the one we adore
You give the healing and grace
Our hearts always hunger for
O, our hearts always hunger for

Worship – April 21, 2013

Call to Worship
Praise our God, all you his servants,
you who fear him, both great and small!

Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice, be glad, and give him glory!

—based on Revelation 19:5-7 (NIV)

Prayer of Confession
Almighty God and Gracious Heavenly Father,
Have mercy on us.
The guilt and shame of our sins
are too great for us to bear.
You alone have the power to pardon.
Forgive us and make us whole.
Fill, cleanse and renew us.
Turn our doubt into reliance,
Our pride into gentleness,
And our self-centeredness into love,
That the world may know your Son,
And enjoy your Grace and Peace,
Through Jesus.  Amen.

Come Ye Sinners
Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus, ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, joined with power
He is able, he is able
He is willing, doubt no more

Come ye needy, come, and welcome
God’s free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Every grace that brings you nigh
Without money, without money
Come to Jesus Christ and buy

Come, ye weary, heavy laden
Bruised and broken by the fall
If you tarry ’til you’re better
You will never come at all
Not the righteous, not the righteous
Sinners Jesus came to call

Let not conscience make you linger
Nor of fitness fondly dream
All the fitness he requires
Is to feel your need of him
This he gives you, this he gives you
‘Tis the Spirit’s rising beam

Lo! The incarnate God, ascended
Pleads the merit of his blood
Venture on him, venture wholly
Let no other trust intrude
None but Jesus, none but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good

Your Grace Is Enough
Great is Your faithfulness, O God
You wrestle with the sinner’s heart
You lead us by still waters and to mercy
And nothing can keep us apart

So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise, O God

Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me

Great is your love and justice God
You use the weak to lead the strong
You lead us in the song of your salvation
And all your people sing along

So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise, O God

Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me

So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise, O God

Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me

Hallelujah, hallelujah
He is holy, he is holy

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy

Gifts — Come Thou Fount
Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it
Mount of God’s unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither to thy help I’ve come
And I hope, by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed his precious blood

O, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let thy grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wand’ring heart to thee

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it
Mount of God’s unchanging love

Profession of the Church
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
He descended to hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead,
ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

—Apostles’ Creed

* ‘Catholic’ is the historic word meaning ‘universal’ – it therefore refers to the entirety of believers throughout history.

Our God Alone
Who formed the mountains
And filled the oceans
Our God alone, our God alone

Who took the dust
And breathed life in us
Our God alone, our God alone

Who came from heaven
For our redemption
Our God alone, our God alone

Who died for sin
That we may live
Our God alone, our God alone

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Who rose again

Our God alone, our God alone

Who is returning, bringing a Kingdom

Sermon“A Doubt that brings Deliverance”
John 3:1-17

The Lord’s Supper — Jesus I Come
Out of my bondage, sorrow and night
Jesus, I come, Jesus I come
Into thy freedom, gladness and light
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of my sickness into thy health
Out of my wanting and into thy wealth
Out of my sin and into thyself
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of my shameful failure and loss
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come
Into the glorious gain of thy cross
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of earth’s sorrows into thy balm
Out of life’s storms and into thy calm
Out of distress into jubilant psalm
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of unrest and arrogant pride
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come
Into thy blessed will to abide
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of myself to dwell in thy love
Out of despair into raptures above
Upward forever on wings like a dove
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of the fear and dread of the tomb
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come
Into the joy and light of thy home
Jesus, I come to thee

Out of the depths of ruin untold
Into the peace of thy sheltering fold
Ever thy glorious face to behold
Jesus, I come to thee

Worship – April 14, 2013

Call to Worship
Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
Make known among the nations what he has done,
And proclaim that his name is exalted.

Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;
Let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
For great is the Holy One of Israel among you

—Isaiah 12:4-6

Prayer of Confession
Have mercy on us, Father.
Free our foolish hearts
from giving anyone or anything the attention,
allegiance, affection, and adoration
that you alone deserve.
Remind us that in Christ
we are forgiven, secure, righteous, and beloved.
May the gospel of your grace
relentlessly expose and dethrone
all ‘empty nothings’ from our hearts.
May the beauty of Jesus
make the idols of our hearts ever so ugly.
We look forward to the day
when we will worship, love and serve only you,
together as your redeemed children.
This we pray in Jesus name, Amen.

O Worship the King
O worship the King
All glorious above
O gratefully sing
His wonderful love

Our Shield and Defender
The Ancient of Days
Pavilioned in splendor
And girded with praise

O tell of his might
O sing of his grace
Whose robe is the light
Whose canopy space

His chariots of wrath
The deep thunderclouds form
And dark is his path
On the wings of the storm

You alone are the matchless King
To you alone be all majesty
Your glories and wonders
What tongue can recite
You breathe in the air
You shine in the light

O measureless might
Ineffable love
While angels delight
To worship above

Thy mercies, how tender
How firm to the end
Our Maker, Defender
Redeemer, and Friend

You alone are the matchless King
To you alone be all majesty
Your glories and wonders
What tongue can recite
You breathe in the air
You shine in the light
(repeat)

O worship the King
All glorious above
O gratefully sing
His wonderful love

Our shield and defender
The ancient of days
Pavilioned in splendor
And girded with praise

All Hail The Power of Jesus’ Name
All hail the power of Jesus’ name
Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown him Lord of all
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown him Lord of all

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race
Ye ransomed from the fall
Hail him who saves you by his grace
And crown him Lord of all
Hail him who saves you by his grace
And crown him Lord of all

Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown him Lord of all
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown him Lord of all

O that, with yonder sacred throng
We at his feet may fall
We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown him Lord of all
We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown him Lord of all

Gifts — Be Still My Soul
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
Leave to your God to order and provide
In every change, he will remain

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
To guide the future, as in ages past
Your hope, your mind, your will let nothing shake
All now mysterious shall be bright

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone
Sorrows forgot, love’s joys restored

Confession of Faith
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my Own,
but belong body and soul, in life and in death-
to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,
and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.
He also watches over me in such a way
that not a hair can fall from my head
without the will of my Father in heaven:
in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.
Because I belong to him,
Christ, by his Holy Spirit,
assures me of eternal life
and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready
from now on to live for him.

Call to Worship
I will extol the LORD at all times;
His praise will always be on my lips.
My soul will boast in the LORD;
Let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the LORD with me;

Let us exalt his name together.

—Psalm 34:1-3  (NIV, 1984)

Prayer of Confession
Merciful Father and God,
You have formed us into the body of Christ.
Forgive where we have not lived as such.
You have called us a peculiar people.
Forgive when we resist our calling.
You have set us apart for your own glory.
Forgive when we dishonor your Name.
You have made us to be a light on a hill.
Forgive when we love the things of darkness.
Cleanse us from sin.  Heal and forgive.
Enable us to love, serve and sacrifice,
In a world torn by sin and desperate,
For the bread of your love.
Through Jesus. Amen.

Everlasting God
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
Wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.

Our God, you reign forever
Our hope, our strong deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint, you won’t grow weary
You’re the defender of the weak,
You comfort those in need.
You lift us up on wings like eagles

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
Wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.

Our God, you reign forever
Our hope, our strong deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint, you won’t grow weary
You’re the defender of the weak,
You comfort those in need.
You lift us up on wings like eagles

Our God, you reign forever
Our hope, our strong deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint, you won’t grow weary
You’re the defender of the weak,
You comfort those in need.
You lift us up on wings like eagles

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

Gifts – Redeemed
Seems like all I could see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last
Then you look at this prisoner and say to me son
Stop fighting a fight that’s already been won

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
And wipe away every stain
Now I’m not who I used to be

All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear you whisper, child lift up your head
I remember O God you’re not done with my yet

I am redeemed, You set my free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
And wipe away every stain
Now I’m not who I used to be

Because I don’t have to be, the old man inside of me
Cause his day is long dead and gone.
Because, I’ve got a new name, a new life I’m not the
Same, and hope that will carry me home

I am redeemed, I am redeemed, You set my free,
You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
And wipe away every stain
Now I’m not who I used to be

O God, I’m not who I used to be
Jesus, I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed,
Thank God redeemed

Profession of the Church
What do you believe about the church of Christ?

We believe and confess
one single catholic or universal church—
a holy congregation and gathering
of true Christian believers.

What binds them all together?

They await their entire salvation in Jesus Christ,
having been washed by his blood,
and sanctified and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

How big is this church?

This holy church is not confined,
bound, or limited to a certain place or certain persons.
But it is spread and dispersed
throughout the entire world,
though still joined and united
in heart and will,
in one and the same Spirit,
by the power of faith.

—from Belgic Confession, Art. 27

Praise the Father, Praise the Son
O sovereign God, O matchless King
The saints adore, the angels sing
And fall before the throne of grace
To You belongs the highest praise

These sufferings, this passing tide
Under your wings I will abide
And every enemy shall flee
You are my hope and victory

Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, Three in One
Clothed in power, and in grace
The name above all other names

To the valley for my soul
Thy great descent has made me whole
Your word my heart has welcomed home
Now peace like water ever flows

O praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, Three in One
Clothed in power, and in grace
The name above all other names

Yours is the kingdom, yours is the power
Yours is the glory, forever
Yours is the kingdom, yours is the power
Yours is the glory, forever

Praise the Father, Praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, Three in One
Clothed in power, and in grace
The name above all other names
The name above all other names

Sermon
“Peril of an Isolated Faith”
Esther 4:1-16

The Lord’s Supper

Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed
Alas! and did my Savior bleed and did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?
Thy body slain, sweet Jesus, Thine— and bathed in its own blood—
While the firm mark of wrath divine, his soul in anguish stood.

refrain
At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my sin washed away,
It’s there, by faith, I gain my sight and find that I can say
I’m free because my Savior bled for sinners such as I

Was it for crimes that I had done he groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!
Well might the sun in darkness hide and shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died, for man the creature’s sin.
(refrain)

Thus might I hide my blushing face while His dear cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, and melt my eyes to tears.
But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give my self away ‘tis all that I can do.
(refrain)
