Worship – May 5, 2013

Call to Worship
We will give thanks to you, O LORD, with our whole heart;
We will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

We will be glad and exult in you;
We will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

—from Psalm 9:1-2 (NRSV)

Prayer of Confession
Sovereign God and Loving Father,
Be merciful to us and through Jesus,
your ‘indescribable gift,’ forgive our sins.
The sins we are aware of,
And those we don’t yet see.
Pardon us, though we are weak and undeserving.
Give us a vision for your Kingdom,
And help us to live in the promise of
What will one day be.
Cause your mercy to reshape us
Into a merciful people,
as you make all things new.
In Jesus Name. Amen.

O For A Thousand
O, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of his grace

Jesus, the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears
‘Tis life and health and peace

He breaks the power of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoners free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

He speaks and listening to his voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful broken hearts rejoice
The humble poor believe

My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of thy name

Charles Wesley, 1739.  Tune, AZMON, Carl G. Glaser, 1784-1829; adapt. Lowell Mason, 1839

All Creatures Of Our God And King
All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
O praise him, alleluia

Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
O praise him, O praise him
Alleluia, allleuia, alleluia

Thou rushing wind that art strong
Ye clouds that sail in heaven along
O praise him, alleluia

Thou rising morn in praise rejoice
Ye lights of evening find your voice
O praise him, O praise him
Alleluia, alleluia, alleuia

Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear,
O praise Him! Alleluia!

Thou fire so masterful and bright,
That givest man both warmth and light
O praise him, O praise him
Alleluia, alleluia, alleuia

Let all things their Creator bless
And worship him in humbleness
O praise him, alleluia

Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son
And praise the Spirit, three in one
O praise him, O praise him
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Gifts — Man of Sorrows
Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By his own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid

Silent as he stood accused
Beaten, mocked, and scorned
Bowing to the Father’s will
He took a crown of thorns

O that rugged cross my salvation
Where your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out hallelujah
Praise and honor unto thee

Sent of heaven God’s own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed him to that tree

O that rugged cross my salvation
Where your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out hallelujah
Praise and honor unto thee

Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
O, is free indeed

Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
O, is free indeed

O that rugged cross my salvation
Where your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out hallelujah
Praise and honor unto thee

See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised
He’s risen from the grave

O that rugged cross my salvation
Where your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out hallelujah
Praise and honor unto thee

Profession of the Church
We believe that God has entrusted the church
with the message of reconciliation
in and through Jesus Christ,
That the church is called to be the salt of the earth
and the light of the world,
That the church is called blessed because it is a peacemaker,
That the church is witness both by word and by deed
to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells.

—From the Belhar Confession

Sermon
“A Glimpse Beyond…”
Deuteronomy 34:1-12

The Lord’s Supper

How Deep the Father’s Love For Us
How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son
To make a wretch his treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one
Bring many sons to glory

Behold a man upon a cross
My sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from his reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father
And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be
World without end
Amen, amen
