Worship – July 28, 2013

Call to Worship
O let us give thanks to the Lord,

for the love of God will never end.

Let we who love God be unashamed to declare it,

because God has answered our cries for help.

The Lord our God has met our every need,

therefore, we will proclaim the love of the Lord!

—based on Psalm 107

Prayer of Confession
Dear Father, forgive our sins.
Forgive our impure actions, thoughts and motives.
Where we have lived for self, forgive us.
Where we have not loved you as you have loved us, forgive us.
Where we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves, forgive us.
We come in Jesus’ Name, our Redeemer, Lord and Friend.
Wash us in your grace, mercy and peace.
Fill us with yourself that we may live for you.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Earth Is Yours
Your voice it thunders
The oaks start twisting
The forest sounds with cedars breaking

The waters see you
And start their writhing
From the depths a song is rising

Now it’s rising from the ground…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Your voice it thunders
The ground is shaking
The mighty mountains now are trembling

Creation sees you
And starts composing
The fields and trees, they start rejoicing

Now it’s rising from the ground
Now it’s rising from the ground
Hear us crying out…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Awesome Is The Lord Most High
Great are you, Lord, mighty in strength
You are faithful and you will ever be
We will praise you all of our days
It’s for your glory we will ever sing

Raise your hands, all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high

You, O Lord, are a shield about me
You are my glory and you lift my head
You always answer when I call your name
You are my God and I will ever sing

Raise your hands all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high
We will praise you together
For now and forever
How awesome is the Lord most high

Hallelujah, hallelujah
How awesome is the Lord most high
Hallelujah, hallelujah
How awesome is the Lord most high

Raise your hands all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high
We will praise You together
For now and forever
How awesome is the Lord most high
The Lord most high

Confession of Faith
In the light of divine grace, we recognize ourselves to be a Church of sinners.

We require forgiveness daily, and live only through the mercy of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  He redeems us from our isolation and unites us into a living Church of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

—from the Moravians: The Belief of the Church – ‘The Ground of the Unity’ of the Unitas Fratum in 1957

Praise To The Lord The Almighty
Praise to the Lord
The Almighty, the King of creation
O my soul, praise him
For he is thy health and salvation

All ye who hear
Now to his temple draw near
Praise him in glad adoration

Praise to the Lord
Who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth
Shelters thee under his wings
Yea, so gently sustaineth

Hast thou not seen
How thy desires e’er have been
Granted in what he ordaineth

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Praise to the Lord
Who doth prosper thy work and defend thee
Surely his goodness and mercy
Here daily attend thee

Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do
If with his love he befriend thee

Praise to the Lord
O let all that is in me adore him
All that hath life and breath
Come now with praises before him

Let the ‘amen’
Sound from his people again
Gladly for aye we adore him
(repeat)

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

The Lord’s Supper

The Apostles’ Creed (for reflection)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise him, all creatures here below
Praise him above, ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Amen

Call to Worship
Hallelujah! We will praise the Lord as long as we live!

Happy are those who have the God of Israel as their helper,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
He is the one who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them.

Hallelujah! We will praise the Lord as long as we live!

He is the one who keeps every promise forever,
who gives justice to the oppressed,
and food to the hungry.

Hallelujah! We will praise the Lord as long as we live!

The Lord frees the prisoners.
The Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts the burdens of those bent beneath their loads.
The Lord loves the righteous.

Hallelujah! We will praise the Lord as long as we live!

—Psalm 146:2a, 5-8

Prayer of Confession — We Will Run
Create in me a clean heart,
For I have turned my face from you
Save us from our ways O God, O God
For we have turned away from you
Lord have mercy

We will run to you, we will run to you
Turning from our sin we return to you
Father heal your world
Make all things new
Make all things new

Your love and mercy build and shape us
Break us and recreate us now
Lord have mercy

We will run to you, we will run to you
Turning from our sin we return to you
Father heal your world
Make all things new
Make all things new
(repeat)

O, bring us back to you
O, bring us back to you
O, bring us back to you
O, bring us back to you

We will run to you, we will run to you
Turning from our sin we return to you
Father heal your world
Make all things new
Make all things new

Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
Joyful, joyful we adore thee
God of glory, Lord of love
Hearts unfold like flowers before thee
Opening to the sun above

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness
Drive the dark of doubt away
Giver of immortal gladness
Fill us with the light of day

All thy works with joy surround thee
Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays
Stars and angels sing around thee
Center of unbroken praise

Field and forest, vale and mountain
Flowery meadow, flashing sea
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in thee

Thou art giving and forgiving
Ever blessing, ever blessed
Wellspring of the joy of living
Ocean depth of happy rest

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother
All who live in love are thine
Teach us how to love each other
Lift us to the joy divine

Mortals join the mighty chorus
Which the morning stars began
Father love is reigning o’er us
Brother love binds man to man

Ever singing march we onward
Victors in the midst of strife
Joyful music leads us sunward
In the triumph song of life

Henry van Dyke, Tune HYMN TO JOY, Ludwig van Beethoven; melody from “Ninth Symphony”; adapted by Edward Hodges, CCLI 241710

O Praise Him
Turn your ear to Heaven
And hear the noise inside
The sound of angels awe
The sound of angels songs

And all this for a King
We could join and sing
All to Christ the King

How constant, how divine
This song of ours will rise
O, how constant how divine
This love of ours will rise, will rise…

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy

Turn your gaze to Heaven
And raise a joyous noise
The sound of salvation come
The sound of rescued ones

And all this for a King
Angels join to sing
All for Christ our King

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
(repeat)

How infinite and sweet
This love so rescuing
O, how infinitely sweet
This great love that has redeemed
As one, we sing…

Hallelujah, hallelujah
He is holy, he is holy

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
(repeat)

Confession of Faith
What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things and still upholds them by his providence?

We can be patient in adversity, thankful in prosperity,
and with a view to the future we can have a firm confidence
in our faithful God and Father
that no creature shall separate us from his love;
for all creatures are so completely in his hand that without his will they cannot so much as move.

—from The Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 28

Agnus Dei
Alleluia, alleluia
For our Lord God almighty reigns
Alleluia, alleluia
For our Lord God almighty reigns
Alleluia

Holy, holy are you Lord God almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb, amen

Alleluia, alleluia
For our Lord God almighty reigns
Alleluia, alleluia
For our Lord God almighty reigns
Alleluia

Holy, holy are you Lord God almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb

You are holy
Holy are you Lord God almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb

Sermon
“Our Dangerous Selves”
Philippians 2:1-11

The Lord’s Supper

Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

My chains are gone, I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood his mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures

My chains are gone, I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior, has ransomed me
And like a flood his mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace
(repeat)

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, who called me here below
Will be forever mine
Will be forever mine
You are forever mine
