Call to Worship
Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
You his servants who do his will.

Praise the LORD, all his works
Everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the LORD, O my soul.

—Psalm 103:21-22 (NIV)

O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me

Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To thy glorious rest above

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Spread his praise from shore to shore
How he loveth, ever loveth
Changeth never, never more

How he watches o’er his loved ones
Died to call them all his own
How for them he intercedeth
Watcheth o’er them from the throne

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Love of every love the best
’Tis an ocean vast of blessing
‘Tis a haven sweet of rest

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
‘Tis a heaven of heavens to me
And it lifts me up to glory
For it lifts me up to thee

Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To thy glorious rest above

The Earth is Yours
Your voice it thunders
The oaks start twisting
The forest sounds with cedars breaking

The waters see you
And start their writhing
From the depths a song is rising

Now it’s rising from the ground…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Your voice it thunders
The ground is shaking
The mighty mountains now are trembling

Creation sees you
And starts composing
The fields and trees, they start rejoicing

Now it’s rising from the ground
Now it’s rising from the ground
Hear us crying out…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Prayer for the People, the City, and the Nations

Gifts — Psalm 46
The Lord is my refuge and strength
Therefore I will not be afraid
Though the mountains give way and fall into the sea
He will come and rescue me

The Lord comes to me at break of day
He reaches down to guide me in his ways
But though the oceans roar in this dark and stormy sea
He will come and rescue me

And hallelujah, he is with me
Hallelujah, we cannot be moved
Hallelujah, he is with me
Hallelujah, I rest secure

Be still and know that he is God
He will be exalted over all
Come and behold his strength and majesty
Yet he will come and rescue me

And hallelujah, he is with me
Hallelujah, we cannot be moved
Hallelujah, he is with me
Hallelujah, I rest secure
Hallelujah, I rest secure

A Confession of Faith
I am called Christian because by faith I am a member of Christ
and so I share in his anointing.
I am anointed to confess his name,
to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks,
to strive with a good conscience against sin and the devil
in this life, and afterward to reign with Christ over all creation for all eternity.

We call him “our Lord” because— not with gold or silver,
but with his precious blood—he has set us free
from sin and from the tyranny of the devil,
and has bought us, body and soul, to be his very own.

—from Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A’s 32, 34

This is Our God
A refuge for the poor
A shelter from the storm
This is our God

He will wipe away your tears
And return your wasted years
This is our God

So call upon his name
He is mighty to save
This is our God

A father to the orphan
A healer to the broken
This is our God

He brings peace to our madness
Comfort in our sadness
This is our God

So call upon his name
He is mighty to save
This is our God

This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
Jesus, Lord and Savior
This is our God

A fountain for the thirsty
A lover for the lonely
This is our God

He brings glory to the humble
And crowns for the faithful
This is our God

So call upon his name
He is mighty to save
This is our God

This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
Jesus, Lord and Savior

You are the one we have waited for
You are the one we have waited for
You are the one we have waited for
Jesus, Lord and Savior
This is our God

Sermon
“They Could Not Reply
Jesus on the Way”
Luke 14:1-6

Prayer of Confession
For Jesus, there was no need to project an image of righteousness.

Women: O God, open our eyes.
Men: O Lord, have mercy.

In Christ we see absolute authenticity in personhood and in action.

Women: O God, show us the truth about ourselves.
Men: O Lord, have mercy.

In Jesus there was no hint of self-deception, no reason to pretend to be good.

Women: O God, illumine our inner being.
Men: O Lord, have mercy.

In Christ there is truth and authenticity. In him there is healing and freedom. Sisters and brothers I declare to you that your sins are forgiven. Be at peace.

All: Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

The Wonderful Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

See from his head, his hands, his feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die
And find that I may truly live

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
All who gather here
By grace draw near and bless Your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die
And find that I may truly live

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
All who gather here
By grace draw near and bless Your name

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride
