Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
“Come to me,
all who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you,
and learn from me,
for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light.”

—Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)

Come Ye Sinners
Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus, ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, joined with power

He is able, he is able
He is willing, doubt no more

Come ye needy, come, and welcome
God’s free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Every grace that brings you nigh

Without money, without money
Come to Jesus Christ and buy

Come, ye weary, heavy laden
Bruised and broken by the fall
If you tarry ’til you’re better
You will never come at all

Not the righteous, not the righteous
Sinners Jesus came to call

Let not conscience make you linger
Nor of fitness fondly dream
All the fitness he requires
Is to feel your need of him

This he gives you, this he gives you
‘Tis the Spirit’s rising beam

Lo! The incarnate God, ascended
Pleads the merit of his blood
Venture on him, venture wholly
Let no other trust intrude

None but Jesus, none but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good

Awesome is The Lord Most High
Great are you, Lord, mighty in strength
You are faithful and you will ever be
We will praise you all of our days
It’s for your glory we will ever sing

Raise your hands, all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high

You, O Lord, are a shield about me
You are my glory and you lift my head
You always answer when I call your name
You are my God and I will ever sing

Raise your hands all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high

We will praise you together
For now and forever
How awesome is the Lord most high

Hallelujah, hallelujah
How awesome is the Lord most high

Hallelujah, hallelujah
How awesome is the Lord most high

Raise your hands all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high

We will praise You together
For now and forever
How awesome is the Lord most high

An Affirmation of God’s Love
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness…
he will have compassion according to
the abundance of his steadfast love…

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine
or nakedness or danger or sword?
As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors
through him who loved us.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons,

neither the present nor the future,

nor any powers, neither height nor depth,

nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

—Lamentations 3:22-23, 32b (ESV), Romans 8:35-39, NIV

Fairest Lord Jesus
Fairest Lord Jesus
Ruler of all nature
Son of God and Son of man

Thee will I cherish
Thee will I honor
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown

Fair are the meadows
Fairer still the woodlands
Robed in the blooming garb of spring

Jesus is fairer
Jesus is purer
Who makes the woeful heart to sing

Fair is the sunshine
Fairer still the moonlight
And all the twinkling starry host

Jesus shines brighter
Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast

Beautiful Savior
Lord of the nations
Son of God and Son of man

Glory and honor
Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be thine

Sermon
“The Compassionate Creator — The Mercy of God in the Brokenness of Man”
Jonah 4:5-11

Prayer of Confession
Mighty God and Compassionate Father,
you are ‘merciful and slow to anger,
abounding in steadfast love.’
You know our weak resolves and unrighteous deeds,
our evil thoughts and impure desires,
have mercy on us and forgive our sin.
Cleanse our hearts and restore us to the sweet fellowship
you created for us to enjoy with you,
with one another, and with our world.
Give us longing hearts for you,
until heaven and earth are one,
and you make all things new.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
Tis grace has brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home

When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun

John Newton, 1779; Tune, AMAZING GRACE, traditional American melody

Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise him, all creatures here below
Praise him above, ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Amen

Thomas Ken, Tune – OLD HUNDREDTH, Genevan Psalter (1551) attr. to Louis Bourgeois
