Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God; I will extol you.
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

—Psalm 118:28-29 (ESV)

All Glory, Laud, and Honor
Hosanna, hosanna in the highest

All glory, laud, and honor
To thee, Redeemer, King
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring

Thou art the King of Israel
Thou David’s royal Son
Who in the Lord’s name comest
The King and Blessèd One

The company of angels
Are praising thee on high
And mortal men and all things
Created make reply

The people of the Hebrews
With palms before thee went
Our prayer and praise and anthems
Before thee we present

To thee, before thy passion
They sang their hymns of praise
To thee, now high exalted
Our melody we raise

Thou didst accept their praises
Accept the prayers we bring
Who in all good delightest
Thou good and gracious King

Hosanna, hosanna in the highest

Theodulph of Orleans, ca. 820; tr. John Mason Neale, 1854 CCLI 241710

King of Glory
Lift up your gaze, be lifted up
Tell everyone how great the love
The love come down from heaven’s gate
To kiss the earth with hope and grace

Sing, who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty

Lift up your hands, be lifted up
Let the redeemed declare the love
We bow down at heaven’s gate
To kiss the feet of hope and grace

Sing, who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty

There is one God, he is holy
There is one Lord over everything
There is one King, he is Jesus
King of glory, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty
You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty
You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

Prayer for the People, the City, and the Nations

Gifts — Hallelujah (What A Savior)
Man of sorrows what a name
For the Son of God who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude
In my place condemned he stood
Sealed my pardon with his blood
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!

Guilty, vile and helpless we
Spotless Lamb of God was he
Full atonement, can it be
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Lifted up was he to die
‘It is finished’ was his cry
Now in heaven exalted high
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!

When he comes our glorious King
All his ransomed home to bring
Then anew his song we’ll sing
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!

Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah!

A Confession of Christ
This Lord, our God, the Word of God,
the Word made flesh, the Son of the Father,
the Son of God, the Son of man,
exalted that he might create us,
humbled that he might recreate us.
Walked among men and suffering what is human.
Let every sigh be a panting after Christ,
let that most beautiful One, who loved even the ugly
that he might make them beautiful, let him be longed for.
Hurry to him alone.

—a prayer from Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD)

10,000 Reasons
Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

The sun comes up
It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing your song again

Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

You’re rich in love
And you’re slow to anger
Your name is great
And your heart is kind

For all your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

And on that day
When my strength is failing
The end draws near
And my time has come

Still my soul will sing
Your praise unending
Ten thousand years
And then forevermore

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

Sermon
“What Prevents Me?”
Acts 8:26-40

Prayer of Confession
Lord Jesus, Friend to sinners,
Gracious Sacrifice, Deliverer and King,
you are worthy and greatly to be praised,
faithful and true, merciful and just.
In suffering, you bore our sorrows.
In humiliation, you experienced our shame.
In death, you carried our guilt,
and you have ‘freed us from our sins by your blood’
help us to live in this reality.
Have mercy on us, and forgive our sins.
Protect us from daily unbelief.
Give us strength to live sacrificially.
Shape us into bearers of the hope,
until you come, and every knee bows,
in heaven and on earth, and below the earth,
to worship you as King. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

Come Boldly To the Throne of Grace
Come boldly to the throne of grace
Ye wretched sinners come
And lay your load at Jesus’ feet
And plead what he has done

How can I come, some soul may say
I’m lame and cannot walk
My guilt and sin have stopped my mouth
I sigh, but dare not talk

Come boldly to the throne of grace
Though lost, and blind, and lame
Jehovah is the sinner’s friend
And ever was the same

He makes the dead to hear his voice
He makes the blind to see
The sinner lost he came to save
And set the prisoner free

Come boldly to the throne of grace
For Jesus fills the throne
And those he kills he makes alive
He hears the sigh or groan

Poor bankrupt souls, who feel and know
The hell of sin within
Come boldly to the throne of grace
The Lord will take you in, take you in

Call to Worship
LEADER:
For who is God, but the LORD?

PEOPLE:
And who is a Rock, except our God?

TOGETHER:
The LORD lives! Praise be to our Rock!
Exalted be our God, the Rock, our Savior!

—based on 2 Samuel 22

O Worship the King
O worship the King
All glorious above
O gratefully sing
His wonderful love

Our Shield and Defender
The Ancient of Days
Pavilioned in splendor
And girded with praise

O tell of his might
O sing of his grace
Whose robe is the light
Whose canopy space

His chariots of wrath
The deep thunderclouds form
And dark is his path
On the wings of the storm

You alone are the matchless King
To you alone be all majesty

Your glories and wonders
What tongue can recite
You breathe in the air
You shine in the light

O measureless might
Ineffable love
While angels delight
To worship above

Thy mercies, how tender
How firm to the end
Our Maker, Defender
Redeemer, and Friend

You alone are the matchless King
To you alone be all majesty

Your glories and wonders
What tongue can recite
You breathe in the air
You shine in the light

You alone are the matchless King
To you alone be all majesty

Your glories and wonders
What tongue can recite
You breathe in the air
You shine in the light

O worship the King
All glorious above
O gratefully sing
His wonderful love

Our shield and defender
The ancient of days
Pavilioned in splendor
And girded with praise

A Confession of the Church
With the whole creation
we wait for the purifying fire of judgment.
For then we will see the Lord face to face.
He will heal our hurts,
end our wars,
and make the crooked straight.
Then we will join in the new song
to the Lamb without blemish
who made us a kingdom and priests.
God will be all in all,
righteousness and peace will flourish,
everything will be made new,
and every eye will see at last
that our world belongs to God!
Hallelujah! Come, Lord Jesus.

—Our World Belongs to God, st. 58
How Great Is Our God
The splendor of a King
Clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice
All the earth rejoice

He wraps himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
And trembles at his voice
And trembles at his voice

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Age to age he stands
And time is in his hands
Beginning and the End
Beginning and the End

The Godhead, three in one
Father, Spirit, Son
The Lion and the Lamb
The Lion and the Lamb

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Name above all names
Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God

Then sings my soul
My Savior God, to thee
How great thou art
How great thou art

Then sings my soul
My Savior God, to thee
How great thou art
How great thou art

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Sermon
“The Art of Being There”
Acts 8:4-25

Prayer of Confession
Father in Heaven,
and Giver of all grace,
your love endures forever.
Be merciful to us and forgive.
Our sins are too great for us to bear.
You have made us your children,
but we act like orphans.
Cause the tenderness of Christ,
that will not snuff out a smoldering wick,
or break a bent reed,
to fill our hearts and minds,
and draw us back to you.
Renew in us a steadfast spirit.
And break our hearts for this broken world,
that you will one day make new.
Through Jesus. Amen

The Lord’s Supper

Lord I Need You
Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without you, I fall apart
You’re the one that guides my heart

Lord, I need you, O I need you
Every hour I need you
My one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

Where sin runs deep, your grace is more
Where grace is found is where you are
And where you are Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord, I need you, O I need you
Every hour I need you
My one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

Teach my song to rise to you
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on you
Jesus, you’re my hope and stay

Lord, I need you, O I need you
Every hour I need you
My one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

You’re my one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

Call to Worship
There is none like you, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.
All the nations you have made shall come and bow down before you, O Lord,
and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things, you alone are God.

—from Psalm 86:8-10 (NRSV)

The Solid Rock
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness veils his lovely face
I rest on his unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

His oath, his covenant, his blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay

When he shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

Better Is One Day
How lovely is your dwelling place
O Lord Almighty
For my soul longs and even faints for you

For here my heart is satisfied
Within your presence
I sing beneath the shadow of your wings

Better is one day in your courts
Better is one day in your house
Better is one day in your courts
Than thousands elsewhere
Than thousands elsewhere

One thing I ask and I would seek
To see your beauty
To find you in the place your glory dwells

Better is one day in your courts
Better is one day in your house
Better is one day in your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

Better is one day in your courts
Better is one day in your house
Better is one day in your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

My heart and flesh cry out
For you the living God
Your Spirit’s water to my soul
I’ve tasted and I’ve seen
Come once again to me
I will draw near to you
I will draw near to you

Better is one day
Better is one day
Better is one day
Than thousands elsewhere
(repeat)

Better is one day in your courts
Better is one day in your house
Better is one day in your courts
Than thousands elsewhere
Than thousands elsewhere
Than thousands elsewhere

A Confession of Faith
What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things
and still upholds them by his providence?

We can be patient in adversity, thankful in prosperity,
and with a view to the future
we can have a firm confidence in our faithful God and Father
that no creature shall separate us from his love.
For all creatures are so completely in his hand
that without his will they cannot so much as move.

—from The Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 28

God With Us
You’ve come to bring peace, to be love
To be nearer to us
You’ve come to bring life, to be light
To shine brighter in us
O Emmanuel, God with us

Our Deliverer, you are Savior
In your presence we find our strength
Over everything, our redemption
God with us, you are God with us

You’ve come to be hope to this world
For your honor and name
You’ve come to take sin, to bear shame
And to conquer the grave
O Emmanuel, God with us

Our Deliverer, you are Savior
In your presence we find our strength
Over everything, our redemption
God with us, you are God with us

You are here, you are holy
We are standing in your glory
You are here, you are holy
We are standing in your glory, Lord

Our Deliverer, you are Savior
In your presence we find our strength
Over everything, our redemption
God with us…

Our Deliverer, you are Savior
In your presence we find our strength
Over everything, our redemption
God with us, you are God with us

Sermon
“The Rester & the Ravager”
Acts 6:8-15, 7:54-8:3

Prayer of Confession
Loving and Merciful Father,
as a shepherd protects his sheep,
you love and pursue us, your children.
We rebel and refuse your goodness.
We harbor evil thoughts.
We doubt your Word.
We wound one another.
We fight for control.
Yet your love is never failing,
flowing from the limitless fountain of your grace.
Cleanse us from our sin.
Rescue us from selfish longings,
and uncaring hearts.
Teach us to love one another,
as testimonies of a renewed people,
in this world that you created to be good.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

In Christ Alone
In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My comforter, my all in all
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save

‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground his body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave he rose again

And as he stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am his and he is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from his hand
‘Til he returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

Call to Worship
Sing to the LORD a new song:
sing to the LORD all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.

—Psalm 96:1-2, NIV

Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
Tis grace has brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home

When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun

John Newton, 1779; Tune, AMAZING GRACE, traditional American melody

Everlasting God
You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won’t grow weary

Strength will rise
As we wait upon the Lord
Wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

Strength will rise
As we wait upon the Lord
Wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

Our God, you reign forever
Our Hope, our strong Deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won’t grow weary

You’re the defender of the weak
You comfort those in need
You lift us up on wings like eagles

Strength will rise
As we wait upon the Lord
Wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

Strength will rise
As we wait upon the Lord
Wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

A Confession of Faith
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

—Apostles’ Creed

*‘Catholic’ is the historic word meaning ‘universal’ – it therefore refers to the entirety of believers throughout history.

God You Reign
You paint the night
You count the stars
And you call them by name
The skies proclaim, ‘God you reign’

Your glory shines
You teach the sun
When to bring a new day
Creation sings, ‘God you reign’

God you reign
God you reign
Forever and ever
God you reign

You part the seas
You move the mountains
With the words that you say
My song remains, ‘God you reign’

You hold my life
You know my heart
And you call me by name
I live to say, ‘God you reign’

God you reign
God you reign
Forever and ever
God you reign

Hallelujah, hallelu
Hallelujah, hallelu

Hallelujah, hallelu
Hallelujah, hallelu

God you reign
God you reign
Forever and ever

Sermon
“Submit Complaints Here”
Acts 6:1-7

Prayer of Confession

Faithful God,
be merciful and cast our sins
into the depths of the sea.
Forgive our indifference to you and one another.
Shape us into a renewed community
that reflects the love and friendship
that you enjoy within your own Being,
as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Heal our broken relationships.
Where there is bitterness and unforgiveness,
melt them into love and reconciliation,
that the world will know that your love
is greater than our own sin and weakness.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus, ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, joined with power

He is able, he is able
He is willing, doubt no more

Come ye needy, come, and welcome
God’s free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Every grace that brings you nigh

Without money, without money
Come to Jesus Christ and buy

Come, ye weary, heavy laden
Bruised and broken by the fall
If you tarry ’til you’re better
You will never come at all

Not the righteous, not the righteous
Sinners Jesus came to call

Let not conscience make you linger
Nor of fitness fondly dream
All the fitness he requires
Is to feel your need of him

This he gives you, this he gives you
‘Tis the Spirit’s rising beam

Lo! The incarnate God, ascended
Pleads the merit of his blood
Venture on him, venture wholly
Let no other trust intrude

None but Jesus, none but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good
