Worship – April 26, 2015

Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
Our hearts are ready, O Lord,
our hearts are ready!

We will sing and make melody!
We will awaken the dawn!

We will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples,
we will sing praises to you among the nations.

For your steadfast love is great above the heavens,
and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

—based on Psalm 108:1-4

Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my Vision
O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me
Save that thou art

Thou my best thought
By day or by night
Waking or sleeping
Thy presence my light

Be thou my wisdom
And thou my true word
I ever with thee
And thou with me, Lord

Thou my great Father
I thy true son
Thou in me dwelling
And I with thee one

Riches I heed not
Nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine inheritance
Now and always

Thou and thou only
First in my heart
High King of heaven
My treasure thou art

High King of heaven
My victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys
O bright heav’ns Son

Heart of my own heart
Whatever befall
Still be my vision
O ruler of all

Blessed Be Your Name
Blessed be your name
In the land that is plentiful
Where your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be your name

Blessed be your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in
Lord still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

Blessed be your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s all as it should be
Blessed be your name

Blessed be your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in
Lord still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be your name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in
Lord still I will say…….

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

A Profession of Faith
“We believe that God has entrusted the church
with the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ,
that the church is called to be the salt of the earth
and the light of the world,
that the church is called blessed
because it is a peacemaker,
that the church is witness both by word and by deed
to the new heaven and the new earth
in which righteousness dwells.”

—From the Belhar Confession

Holy Is The Lord
We stand and lift up our hands
For the joy of the Lord is our strength

We bow down and worship him now
How great, how awesome is he

And together we sing, everyone sing

Holy is the Lord God almighty
The earth is filled with his glory
Holy is the Lord God almighty
The earth is filled with his glory
The earth is filled with his glory

We stand and lift up our hands
For the joy of the Lord is our strength

We bow down and worship him now
How great, how awesome is he

And together we sing, everyone sing

Holy is the Lord God almighty
The earth is filled with his glory
Holy is the Lord God almighty
The earth is filled with his glory
The earth is filled with his glory

It is rising up all around
It’s the anthem of the Lord’s renown

It is rising up all around
It’s the anthem of the Lord’s renown

And together we sing, everyone sing
And together we sing, everyone sing

Holy is the Lord God almighty
The earth is filled with his glory
Holy is the Lord God almighty
The earth is filled with his glory
The earth is filled with his glory
The earth is filled with his glory

Sermon
“Good Works & Acts of Charity”
Acts 9: 32-43

Prayer of Confession
‘Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity
and passing over transgression?’
‘You do not remain angry forever,
because you delight in steadfast love.’
Be merciful and forgive our sin, Father.
Thank you for the atoning sacrifice of Christ,
who died on our behalf and bore our sin,
that we might be reconciled to you.
Give us hearts of gratitude that embody
the gospel to one another and the world
that you created to be good.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
O love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be

O light that followest all my way
I yield my flickering torch to thee
My heart restores its borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be

O joy that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be

O cross that liftest up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life’s glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

Still Here
Heartaches,
I’ve had my share of heartaches,
But I’m still here

Trouble,
I’ve seen my share of trouble,
But I’m still here

Bruises,
I’ve taken my lumps and bruises,
But I’m still here

Loneliness,
I’ve had my share of loneliness,
But I’m still here

Through it all I’ve made it through
Another day’s journey,
God kept me here

Through it all I’ve made it through
Another day’s journey,
God kept me here

Lied on,
Many times I’ve been lied on,
But I’m still here

Burdens,
I had to bare so many burdens,
But I’m still here

Dark days,
I’ve had my share of dark days,
But I’m still here, yes I am

Disappointments,
I’ve had so many disappointments,
But I’m still here

Through it all I’ve made it through
Another day’s journey,
God kept me here

Through it all I’ve made it through
Another day’s journey,
God kept me here

Through it all I’ve made it through
Another day’s journey,
I’m still here

I have decided
I called out his name
I’m following Jesus now
and he knows the way
I made up my mind
I leave it behind

No turning back
No turning back
No turning back
I’m moving on
Not looking back
I’m giving him
All that I have
No turning back
No turning back

Though I may wander
I am not lost
So many distractions
But, I look to the cross
I made up my mind
I leave it behind

No turning back
No turning back
I’m moving on
Not looking back
I’m giving him
All that I have
No turning back
No turning back

Say I have decided
To follow Jesus
Say I have decided
I’m following Jesus
Following him

No turning back
No turning back
I’m moving on
Not looking back
I’m giving him
All that I have
No turning back
No turning back

No turning back
No turning back
I’m moving on
Not looking back
I’m giving him

And Can It Be
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood
Died he for me who caused his pain
For me who him to death pursued

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me

He left his Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite his grace
Emptied himself of all but love
And bled for Adam’s helpless race

’Tis mercy all, immense and free
For O my God, it found out me

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me
(repeat)

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light

My chains fell off, my heart was free
I rose, went forth, and followed thee

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me
(repeat)

No condemnation now I dread
Jesus, and all in him, is mine
Alive in him, my living head
And clothed in righteousness divine

Bold I approach the eternal throne
And claim the crown, through Christ my own

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me
(repeat)

An Affirmation of Belief
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith
into this grace in which we stand,

and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings,
knowing that suffering produces endurance,

and endurance produces character,

and character produces hope,

and hope does not put us to shame,

because God’s love has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

—Romans 5:1-5

Great Are You Lord
You give life, you are love,
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope
You restore ev’ry heart that is broken
And great are you Lord

It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to you only

You give life, you are love,
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope
You restore ev’ry heart that is broken
And great are you Lord

It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to you only

And all the earth will shout your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are you Lord

And all the earth will shout your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are you Lord

And all the earth will shout your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are you Lord

It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to you only

So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to you only

Sermon
“Weathering the Storm”
Acts 9: 20-31

Prayer of Confession
Sovereign God and Loving Father,
you have entered into our brokenness,
by sending your Son.
And therefore, out of evil you intend good.
Out of suffering you offer hope.
Out of loss you cause gain.
Out of death you bring life.
So take our imperfect and often weary lives,
and redeem them for your sake.
Cause the renewing power of the gospel,
to flow to those we love, and to our world.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

Come Ye Sinners
Come ye sinners, poor and needy
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, love and power

Come ye thirsty, come and welcome
God’s free bounty glorified
True belief in true repentance
And every grace that brings you nigh

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O there are ten thousand charms

Come ye weary, heavy laden
Lost and ruined by the fall
If you tarry ’til you’re better
You will never come at all

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O there are ten thousand charms

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O there are ten thousand charms

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O there are ten thousand charms

O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me

Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To thy glorious rest above

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Spread his praise from shore to shore
How he loveth, ever loveth
Changeth never, never more

How he watches o’er his loved ones
Died to call them all his own
How for them he intercedeth
Watcheth o’er them from the throne

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
Love of every love the best
’Tis an ocean vast of blessing
‘Tis a haven sweet of rest

O the deep, deep love of Jesus
‘Tis a heaven of heavens to me
And it lifts me up to glory
For it lifts me up to thee

Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To thy glorious rest above

Your Grace is Enough
Great is Your faithfulness, O God
You wrestle with the sinner’s heart
You lead us by still waters and to mercy
And nothing can keep us apart

So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise, O God

Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me

Great is your love and justice God
You use the weak to lead the strong
You lead us in the song of your salvation
And all your people sing along

So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise, O God

Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me
(repeat)

So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise, O God

Gifts – For the Lamb
On a shameful day he died
In the sorrow of defeat
But forgiveness was his cry
As his blood ran down for me

How the Father’s heart was torn
As his only Son was slain
But the earth would soon rejoice
From the place where hope was lain

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won
In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

By his Spirit we are raised
To the fullness of new life
In a moment we’ll be changed
And forever glorified

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won
In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

Most high and lifted up, be glorified forever
Jesus has overcome! Declare it now together
Most high and lifted up, be glorified forever
Jesus has overcome! Declare it now together

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won
In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won
In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world
For the Lamb has overcome the world
For the Lamb has overcome the world

A Litany
And we know that for those who love God
all things work together for good,
for those who are called according to his purpose.

All things, good and bad

When our resolves are weak

When our feet stumble

When are hopes are faint

When our hearts are broken

When we can’t see the good

When all we know is that
God loves us and we love him

Those who are called are loved

Those who are called are his.

He is worthy of our trust

To God be the glory. Amen.

—based on Romans 8:28

This Is Our God
A refuge for the poor
A shelter from the storm
This is our God

He will wipe away your tears
And return your wasted years
This is our God

So call upon his name
He is mighty to save
This is our God

A father to the orphan
A healer to the broken
This is our God

He brings peace to our madness
Comfort in our sadness
This is our God

So call upon his name
He is mighty to save
This is our God

This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
Jesus, Lord and Savior
This is our God

A fountain for the thirsty
A lover for the lonely
This is our God

He brings glory to the humble
And crowns for the faithful
This is our God

So call upon his name
He is mighty to save
This is our God

This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for
This is the one we have waited for

Into the glorious gain of thy cross

Into thy blessed will to abide

Easter Worship – April 5, 2015

An Easter Welcome

‘On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”

—Luke 24:1-6

He Is Risen
Robed in grace, adorned with truth
The friend of sinners came
He found me in my wretchedness
And called me by his name

My Savior died that I might live
He wept that I might see
The curse of darkness overcome
By Christ’s awakening

He is risen! Let praise arise, he is alive!
He is risen! Lift up your eyes, he is alive!

The Friend of sinners took on flesh
To save me from despair
The burden of the cross he bore
Outweighs the shame I bear

Christ gave his life to purchase mine
He bled for my reward
O glorious day, O radiant light
Our resurrected Lord

He is risen! Let praise arise, he is alive!
He is risen! Lift up your eyes, he is alive!

He is risen! Let praise arise, he is alive!
He is risen! Lift up your eyes, he is alive!

The Son of God displayed his love
In death upon the tree
And proved his power when he arose
To win the victory

He burst the bands of death and hell
And triumphed o’er the grave
Oh praise the name of Jesus Christ
The only name that saves

He is risen! Let praise arise, he is alive!
He is risen! Lift up your eyes, he is alive!

He is risen! Let praise arise, he is alive!
He is risen! Lift up your eyes, he is alive!

O Friend of sinners, take my life
I bow before your throne
Seal my heart and stir my soul
To worship you alone

Call to Worship
Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He has raised Jesus from the dead.

Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise.
You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy!

For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.

So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

“Christ is risen from the dead,
trampling down death by death,
and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!”

Christ is risen, and you are overthrown.

Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen.

Christ is risen, and the Angels rejoice.

Christ is risen, and life reigns.

Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the grave.

Alleluia! Christ is risen.

He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

—Isaiah 26:19, Romans 13:12, the Troparion of Pascha, an Orthodox hymn chanted at Easter (“Pascha”), John Chrysostom’s, Sermon on the Lord’s Resurrection & Traditional Easter Affirmation.

Christ is Risen
Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely you’ve bled for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven’s will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown
No burden great can hold you down
In strength you reign
Forever let your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

O, death, where is your sting
O, hell, where is your victory
O, church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead, he’s alive, he’s alive

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

The King of kings, O come adore
Our God who reigns forevermore

Crown him the Lord of life
Who triumphed o’er the grave
And rose victorious in the strife
For those he came to save

His glories now we sing
Who died and rose on high
Who died, eternal life to bring
And lives that death may die

Majesty! Lord of all!
Let ev’ry throne before him fall!
The King of kings, O come adore
Our God who reigns forevermore…evermore!

All hail Redeemer, hail
For he has died for me!
His praise and glory shall not fail
Throughout eternity

All hail Redeemer, hail
For he has died for me!
His praise and glory shall not fail
Throughout eternity

Majesty! Lord of all!
Let ev’ry throne before him fall!
The King of kings, O come adore
Our God who reigns forevermore

Majesty! Lord of all!
Let ev’ry throne before him fall!
The King of kings, O come adore
Our God who reigns forevermore

Praise God who reigns forevermore
You’re the God who reigns forevermore

A Resurrection Creed
Christ has died and Christ has risen. And if Christ was not raised, our preaching is useless and so is our faith. More than that, we would be liars about God. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Even in Christ, if we have hope only for this life, we are to be pitied more than all people.

How fair and lovely is the hope which the Lord gave to the dead when He laid down like them beside them. Rise up and come forth and sing praise to Him who has raised you from destruction.

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Death came through one man, but the resurrection of the dead also comes through one man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

How fair and lovely is the hope which the Lord gave to the dead when He laid down like them beside them. Rise up and come forth and sing praise to Him who has raised you from destruction.

Let us Love and Sing and Wonder
Let us love and sing and wonder
Let us praise the Savior’s name
He has hushed the law’s loud thunder
He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame

Let us love the Lord who bought us
Pitied us when enemies
Called us by his grace and taught us
Gave us ears and gave us eyes

He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He presents our souls to God

Let us wonder, grace and justice
Join and point to mercy’s store
When through grace in Christ our trust is
Justice smiles and asks no more

He who washed us with his blood
He who washed us with his blood
He who washed us with his blood
Has secured our way to God

Let us praise, and join the chorus
Of the saints enthroned on high
Here they trusted him before us
Now their praises fill the sky

He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He will bring us home to God

Revelation Song
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Holy, holy is he
Sing a new song to him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Clothed in rainbows of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor
Strength and glory and power be
To you the only wise King

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder
At the mention of your name
Jesus your name is power
Breath and living water
Such a marvelous myst’ry…

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

An Easter Reading – Acts 9:1-8
But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.”

The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.

The Easter Message: “Blinded by Love”

Christ the Lord is Risen Today
Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia
Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia
Death in vain forbids him rise, Alleluia
Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia

Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia
Made like him, like him we rise, Alleluia
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia
