Welcome & Announcements

Liturgy for the Second Advent Candle
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,
for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…

Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news;
lift up your voice with strength,

O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”

—Isaiah 9:2, Revelation 21:1, Isaiah 40:9

O Come All Ye Faithful
O come, all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem
Come and behold him
Born the King of angels

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Sing, choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
O sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above
Glory to God
All glory in the highest

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Yea, Lord, we greet thee
Born this happy morning
Jesus, to thee be all glory giv’n
Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Latin hymn; attr. John Francis Wade, 1751; tr. Frederick Oakeley, 1841.
Tune, ADESTE FIDELES, John Francis Wade’s Cantus Diversi, 1751

Joy to the World
Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare him room

And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make his blessings flow

Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as, far as, the curse is found

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness

And wonders of his love
And wonders of his love
And wonders, wonders of his love

Make a joyful sound, it’s Christmas
Let his praise resound, it’s Christmas

A Confession of Jesus
Why do we call Jesus “our Lord”?

Because – not with gold or silver,
but with his precious blood
he has set us free from sin
and from the tyranny of the devil,
and has bought us, body and soul,
to be his very own.

—from Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 34

Silent Night
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight

Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia

Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light

Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

Sermon
“Indispensable Messiness”
Matthew 1:18-24

Prayer of Confession
Exalted God and Incarnate King,
majestic and merciful,
worthy of adoration, worthy of praise.
forgive our transgressions.
We are often wayward and always weak,
and mired in self and sin.
Cause the wondrous love of Christ
to melt our indifference and unbelief,
and shape us into a community
that loves one another, our neighbors,
and this world you created to be good.
Grant us expectant hearts and hopeful lives,
until Christ comes, and makes all things new.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
Let us love and sing and wonder
Let us praise the Savior’s name
He has hushed the law’s loud thunder
He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame

Let us love the Lord who bought us
Pitied us when enemies
Called us by his grace and taught us
Gave us ears and gave us eyes

He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He presents our souls to God

Let us wonder, grace and justice
Join and point to mercy’s store
When through grace in Christ our trust is
Justice smiles and asks no more

He who washed us with his blood
He who washed us with his blood
He who washed us with his blood
Has secured our way to God

Let us praise, and join the chorus
Of the saints enthroned on high
Here they trusted him before us
Now their praises fill the sky

He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He will bring us home to God
