WORSHIP – July 30, 2017

Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
The heavens constantly tell the wonders of God,
and the skies declare what he has done.
Each day informs the following day;
each night announces to the next.
They don’t speak a word,
and there is never the sound of a voice.
Yet their message reaches all the earth,
and it travels around the world.

Let our words and our thoughts be pleasing to you, Lord,
because you are our mighty rock and our protector.

—based on Psalm 19

This Is My Father’s World
This is my Father’s world
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres

This is my Father’s world
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas
His hand the wonders wrought

This is my Father’s world
The birds their carols raise
The morning light, the lily white
Declare their maker’s praise

This is my Father’s world
He shines in all that’s fair
In the rustling grass I hear him pass
He speaks to me everywhere

This is my Father’s world
O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong
God is the ruler yet

This is my Father’s world
Why should my heart be sad
The Lord is King, let the heavens ring
God reigns, let the earth be glad

This is my Father’s world
Why should my heart be sad
The Lord is King, let the heavens ring
God reigns, let the earth be glad

The Earth is Yours
Your voice it thunders
The oaks start twisting
The forest sounds with cedars breaking

The waters see you
And start their writhing
From the depths a song is rising

Now it’s rising from the ground…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Your voice it thunders
The ground is shaking
The mighty mountains now are trembling

Creation sees you
And starts composing
The fields and trees, they start rejoicing

Now it’s rising from the ground
Now it’s rising from the ground
Hear us crying out…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

King of Glory
Let the King of my heart
Be the mountain where I run
The fountain I drink from
Oh, he is my song

Let the King of my heart
Be the shadow where I hide
The ransom for my life
Oh, he is my song

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

Let the King of my heart
Be the wind inside my sails
The anchor in the waves
Oh, he is my song

Let the King of my heart
Be the fire inside my veins
The echo of my days
Oh, he is my song

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down
You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down
You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

When the night is holding on to me
God is holding on

When the night is holding on to me
God is holding on

Holy, Holy, Holy
Holy, holy, holy
Lord God almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to thee

Holy, holy, holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed trinity

Holy, holy, holy
Though the darkness hide thee
Though the eye of sinful man
Thy glory may not see

Only thou art holy
There is none beside thee
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity

Holy, holy, holy
Lord God almighty
All thy works shall praise thy name
In earth, and sky, and sea

Holy, holy, holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed trinity
God in three persons, blessed trinity

Sermon
“The Open Hand — The Church is…”
Matthew 5:43-48

Prayer of Confession
O Lord, we have not longed for your coming
and kingdom as we ought.
We easily exalt ourselves
instead of denying ourselves,
taking up our cross, and following you.
We easily cling to the things of this world
and count them dear.
We easily grow cold to the needs of the poor,
the lonely, and the suffering.
We easily neglect those who are without justice,
hope, or Christ in this world.
Father, forgive our offenses.
Grant us, by your Spirit, power to live in the light.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ,
who dwells with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.

— 1 John 1:9

The Lord’s Supper

In Christ Alone
In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My comforter, my all in all
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save

‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground his body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave he rose again

And as he stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am his and he is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from his hand
‘Til he returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
