Call to Worship
Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
—Psalm 96:1-3
Cornerstone
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus’ name
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all
When darkness seems to hide his face
I rest on his unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My Anchor holds within the veil
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all
When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless, to stand before the throne
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
All hail the power of Jesus’ name
Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown him Lord of all
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown him Lord of all
Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race
Ye ransomed from the fall
Hail him who saves you by his grace
And crown him Lord of all
Hail him who saves you by his grace
And crown him Lord of all
Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown him Lord of all
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown him Lord of all
O that, with yonder sacred throng
We at his feet may fall
We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown him Lord of all
We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown him Lord of all

O Praise Him
Turn your ear to Heaven
And hear the noise inside
The sound of angels awe
The sound of angels songs
And all this for a King
We could join and sing
All to Christ the King
How constant, how divine
This song of ours will rise
O, how constant how divine
This love of ours will rise, will rise…
O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
Turn your gaze to Heaven
And raise a joyous noise
The sound of salvation come
The sound of rescued ones
And all this for a King
Angels join to sing
All for Christ our King
O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
How infinite and sweet
This love so rescuing
O, how infinitely sweet
This great love that has redeemed
As one, we sing…
Hallelujah, hallelujah
He is holy, he is holy
O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy

Prayer for the People, the City, and the Nations
Gifts — I Have This Hope
As I walk this great unknown
Questions come and questions go
Was there purpose for the pain
Did I cry these tears in vain
I don’t want to live in fear
I want to trust that you are near
Trust your grace can be seen
In both triumph and tragedy
I have this hope
In the depth of my soul
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me and you won’t let go
But sometimes my faith feels thin
Like the night will never end
Will you catch every tear
Or will you just leave me here
I have this hope
In the depth of my soul
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me and you won’t let go
I have this hope
In the depth of my soul
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me and you won’t let go
Whatever happens I will not be afraid
Cause you are closer than this breath that I take
You calm the storm when I hear you call my name
I still believe that one day I’ll see your face
I have this hope
In the depth of my soul
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me…
I have this hope
In the depth of my soul
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me and you won’t let go
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me and you won’t let go
In the flood or the fire
You’re with me and you won’t let go

Sermon
Out of Nowhere — David & Samuel
1 Samuel 16:1-13
Prayer of Confession
Father, you know us deeply, better than we know ourselves.
You know that we look on the outside,
allowing externals to drive our affections, rather than holiness.
You know how we measure our worth by what we accomplish,
rather than by who we are in Christ.
You know that we often value others for what they give
and how they make us feel, rather than by who they are and can be.
We look on the outside, but you look on the inside.
Have mercy on us, forgive our sin.
Forgive our critical spirits and unkind assumptions.
Forgive our unbelief and ingratitude.
Help us to see ourselves and others the way you see us.
We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared.
— Psalm 130: 3-4
The Lord’s Supper
How Deep the Father’s Love
How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only Son
To make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns his face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory
Behold the man upon a cross
My sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished
I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
Why should I gain from his reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
