Call to Worship
I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart;
I will tell of all Your marvelous works.

I will be glad and rejoice in You;
I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.

— Psalm 9:1-2

O For a Thousand
O, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of his grace

Jesus, the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears
‘Tis life and health and peace

He breaks the power of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoners free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

He speaks and listening to his voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful broken hearts rejoice
The humble poor believe

My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of thy name

Lion and the Lamb
He’s coming on the clouds
Kings and kingdoms will bow down

Every chain will break
As broken hearts declare his praise
For who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring in power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before him

Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow
Before the Lion and the Lamb
Every knee will bow before him

Open up the gate
Make way before the King of kings
The God who comes to save
Is here to set the captives free
For who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring in power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before him

Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow
Before the Lion and the Lamb
Every knee will bow before him

Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord Almighty?
Who can stop the Lord?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring in power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before him

Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow
Before the Lion and the Lamb
Every knee will bow before him

Sermon
“The Way Through — David, Absalom & Joab”
2 Samuel 18:31-19:8

Prayer of Confession
Father, when we were your enemies
you loved us and you reconciled us to yourself
through the death of your Son.
You have held back nothing in making us your own.
Still, we have failed to walk humbly before you;
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
through what we have done and what we have left undone.
We come now into your presence
confessing our flaws and failures,
rejoicing in fact Jesus himself bore our sins
in his body on the cross.
We praise you and give you thanks
that you do not count our sins against us,
and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.
Grant us now, we pray, the grace to die daily to sin,
and to rise daily to new life in Christ,
who lives and reigns with you,
and in whose strong name we pray. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

— Romans 5:1

The Lord’s Supper

O Praise the Name
I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see his wounds, his hands, his feet
My Savior on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid him down in Joseph’s tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise his name forever more
For endless days we will sing your praise
O Lord, O Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death, where is your sting
The angels roar for Christ the King

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise his name forever more
For endless days we will sing your praise
O Lord, O Lord our God

He shall return in robes of white
The blazing Son shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus’ face

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise his name forever more
For endless days we will sing your praise
O Lord, O Lord our God
O Lord, O Lord our God

Enough
All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

You are my supply, my breath of life
Still more awesome than I know
You are my reward, worth living for
Still more awesome than I know

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

You’re my sacrifice of greatest price
Still more awesome than I know
You’re my coming King, you are ev’rything
Still more awesome than I know

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you…

More than all I want
More than all I need
You are more than enough for me

Gifts — How Majestic
Mothers, come adore his name
Sisters, raise your hands in praise
Lift your heads, taste and see all he’s done
Heaven to earth has come

Fathers, shout the victor’s cry
Brothers, feast upon his life
Joy has dawned, death has been overthrown
Mercy is on its throne

Oh Lord, our Lord
How majestic is your name in all the earth
Oh Lord, our Lord
How majestic is your name in all the earth

Sinners, come behold your King
Sufferers, rise with hope and sing
All is well, mercies are new this day
Burdens are met with grace

Oh Lord, our Lord
How majestic is your name in all the earth
Oh Lord, our Lord
How majestic is your name in all the earth

All helpless, all secure
All hopeful and all broken
All thankless and all poor
All peaceful and all violent

All fearless, all afraid
All angry, all rejoicing
All doubting, all assured
All joyful and all mourning

Come gaze upon his glory
Come receive his love and mercy
His grace declares his glory
You are loved forever wholly

What a Beautiful Name
You were the Word at the beginning
One with God, the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in you our Christ

What a beautiful name it is
What a beautiful name it is
The name of Jesus Christ, my King

What a beautiful name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful name it is, the name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus, you brought heaven down
My sin was great, your love was greater
What could separate us now

What a wonderful name it is
What a wonderful name it is
The name of Jesus Christ, my King

What a wonderful name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful name it is, the name of Jesus
What a wonderful name it is, the name of Jesus

Death could not hold you
The veil tore before you
You silenced the boast of sin and grave

The heavens are roaring
The praise of your glory
For you are raised to life again

You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever, God you reign

Yours is the Kingdom
Yours is the glory
Yours is the name above all names

What a powerful name it is
What a powerful name it is
The name of Jesus Christ, my King

What a powerful name it is
Nothing can stand against
What a powerful name it is, the name of Jesus
What a powerful name it is, the name of Jesus
What a powerful name it is, the name of Jesus

Fairest Lord Jesus
Fairest Lord Jesus
Ruler of all nature
Son of God and Son of man

Thee will I cherish
Thee will I honor
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown

Fair are the meadows
Fairer still the woodlands
Robed in the blooming garb of spring

Jesus is fairer
Jesus is purer
Who makes the woeful heart to sing

Fair is the sunshine
Fairer still the moonlight
And all the twinkling starry host

Jesus shines brighter
Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast

Beautiful Savior
Lord of the nations
Son of God and Son of man

Glory and honor
Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be thine

Sermon
“The Way Through — David, Absalom & Joab”
2 Samuel 18:31-19:8

Prayer of Confession
Lord, we confess that
we are not the people we want others to think we are;
we are afraid to admit even to ourselves
what lies in the depths of our souls.
But we do not want to hide our true selves from you.
We believe that you know us as we are, and yet you still love us.
Help us not to shrink from self-knowledge;
teach us to respect ourselves for your sake;
give us the courage to put our trust in your guiding power.
Raise us out of the paralysis of guilt and fear
and help us to live as a forgiven people.
Through Jesus we pray, Amen.

—adapted from the Covenant Hymnal

Assurance of Pardon
He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.

— Titus 3:5-6

The Lord’s Supper

Come Ye Sinners
Come ye sinners, poor and needy
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, love and power

Come ye thirsty, come and welcome
God’s free bounty glorified
True belief in true repentance
And every grace that brings you nigh

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

Come ye weary, heavy laden
Lost and ruined by the fall
If you tarry ’til you’re better
You will never come at all

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in his arms
And in the arms of my dear Savior
O, there are ten thousand charms

Call to Worship
It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;

to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,

to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre.

For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work;
at the works of your hands I sing for joy.

—Psalm 92:1-4

All the Poor and Powerless
All the poor and powerless
And all the lost and lonely
And all the thieves will come confess
And know that you are holy
And know that you are holy

And all will sing out hallelujah
And we will cry out hallelujah

All the hearts who are content
And all who feel unworthy
And all who hurt with nothing left
Will know that you are holy

And all will sing out hallelujah
And we will cry out hallelujah

Shout it
Go on and sing it from the mountains
Go on and tell it to the masses
That he is God

Shout it
Go on and sing it from the mountains
Go on and tell it to the masses
That he is God

And all will sing out hallelujah
And we will cry out hallelujah

And all will sing out hallelujah
And we will cry out hallelujah

How Firm a Foundation
How firm a foundation
Ye saints of the Lord
Is laid for your faith
In his excellent Word

What more can he say
Than to you he hath said
To you, who for refuge
To Jesus have fled

Fear not, I am with thee
O be not dismayed
For I am thy God
And will still give thee aid

I’ll strengthen thee, help thee
And cause thee to stand
Upheld by my righteous
Omnipotent hand

When through the deep waters
I call thee to go
The rivers of woe
Shall not thee overflow

For I will be with thee
Thy troubles to bless
And sanctify to thee
Thy deepest distress

When through fiery trials
Thy pathways shall lie
My grace, all sufficient
Shall be thy supply

The flame shall not hurt thee
I only design
Thy dross to consume
And thy gold to refine

The soul that on Jesus
Hath leaned for repose
I will not, I will not
Desert to its foes

That soul, though all hell
Should endeavor to shake
I’ll never, no never
No never forsake

Glory is Yours
Blessing, honor, strength, and power
Yours alone now and forever
Love this world could never stop
There is no one like our God

Reaching down to touch the broken
Mercy breaking through this moment
Faithful is the one who saves
Worthy is your name

Oh God, the glory is yours
The Kingdom has come
And the battle is over
Jesus, in your name we rise
And the glory is yours
The glory is yours

Throngs and angels watch in wonder
On that day when time is over
Every heart at last proclaim
“Worthy is your name!”

Oh God, the glory is yours
The Kingdom has come
And the battle is over
Jesus, in your name we rise
And the glory is yours
The glory is yours

Oh God, the glory is yours
The Kingdom has come
And the battle is over
Jesus, in your name we rise
And the glory is yours
The glory is yours

Nobody beside you
There has never been anyone, anything like you
Nobody beside you
There has never been anyone, anything like you

Nobody beside you
There will never be anyone, anything like you
Nobody beside you
There will never be anyone, anything like you

Oh God, the glory is yours
The Kingdom has come
And the battle is over
Jesus, in your name we rise
And the glory is yours
The glory is yours

Oh God, the glory is yours
The Kingdom has come
And the battle is over
Jesus, in your name we rise
And the glory is yours
The glory is yours

Cornerstone
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus’ name

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all

When darkness seems to hide his face
I rest on his unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My Anchor holds within the veil

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all

When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless, to stand before the throne

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm he is Lord
Lord of all

Sermon
“Breaking the First Barrier — David & Shimei”
2 Samuel 16:5-14

Prayer of Confession
Abba Father,
you chose us as your children,
but we have forgotten who we are.
We live apart from you, as orphans.
We serve ourselves instead of our neighbors.
Forgive us; cleanse us; restore us.
Help us to remember that, as your children,
our citizenship is in heaven.
Give us grace and mercy to live transformed lives
until you return to make all things new.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Dear Refuge of My Weary Soul
Dear refuge of my weary soul
On thee, when sorrows rise
On thee, when waves of trouble roll
My fainting hope relies

To thee I tell each rising grief
For thou alone canst heal
Thy word can bring a sweet relief
For every pain I feel

But oh, when gloomy doubts prevail
I fear to call thee mine
The springs of comfort seem to fail
And all my hopes decline

Yet gracious God, where shall I flee
Thou art my only trust
And still my soul would cleave to thee
Though prostrate in the dust

Hast thou not bid me seek thy face
And shall I seek in vain
And can the ear of sovereign grace
Be deaf when I complain

No still the ear of sovereign grace
Attends the mourner’s prayer
O may I ever find access
To breathe my sorrows there

Thy mercy seat is open still
Here let my soul retreat
With humble hope attend thy will
And wait beneath thy feet

Thy mercy seat is open still
Here let my soul retreat
With humble hope attend thy will
And wait beneath thy feet

Call to Worship

Shout for joy to God, all the earth!

Sing the glory of his name;
make his praise glorious.

Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you.

All the earth bows down to you;
they sing praise to you, they sing the praises of your name.”

—Psalm 66:1-4

Come Thou Fount
Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I’m fixed upon it
Mount of God’s unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither to thy help I’ve come
And I hope, by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed his precious blood

Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let thy grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wand’ring heart to thee

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing

Gifts — Last Word
The storm rises from the deep
And rages around me
But I will remember

When doubt wars within my heart
The battle almost lost
I will remember

You have the last word
It is finished
You have the last word
It is finished
My fear is silenced in your love
My hope is endless

Your voice that calmed the violent sea
Speaks courage over me
So I will remember

The words that wake the sun to rise
Are breaking through my night
And I will remember

You have the last word
It is finished
You have the last word
It is finished
My fear is silenced in your love
My hope is endless

Your word stands through the ages
Your voice shatters the darkness
In you we are more than conquerors

You speak and strongholds surrender
Your name overcomes the enemy
In you we are more than conquerors

Your word stands through the ages
Your voice shatters the darkness
In you we are more than conquerors

You speak and strongholds surrender
Your name overcomes the enemy
In you we are more than conquerors

You have the last word

One and Only
Who spoke and taught the sun to rise
Whose lips proclaimed the birth of light
Who sparked the kindling of stars
And set the fire in our hearts

Who sang as planets learned their dance
Who poured the oceans from his hands
Whose breath awakened life from dust
And leaves me breathless at his touch

Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours
How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours and yours alone

Who is this man upon a cross
Who left his throne to ransom us
Who died to save us at our worst
And rose to give us heaven’s best
You rose to give us heaven’s best

Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours
How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours

My Savior, Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours
How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours and yours alone

We will watch the bridegroom come
And heaven breaking like the dawn
All dressed in white, our shame is gone
We’re free to dance before your throne

Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours
How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours

My Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours
How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours and yours alone

Praise the Father, Praise the Son
O sovereign God, O matchless King
The saints adore, the angels sing
And fall before the throne of grace
To you belongs the highest praise

These sufferings, this passing tide
Under your wings I will abide
And every enemy shall flee
You are my hope and victory

Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, Three in One
Clothed in power, and in grace
The name above all other names

To the valley for my soul
Your great descent has made me whole
Your word my heart has welcomed home
Now peace like water ever flows

O praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, Three in One
Clothed in power, and in grace
The name above all other names

Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the power
Yours is the glory, forever

Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the power
Yours is the glory, forever

Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, Three in One
Clothed in power, and in grace

Sermon
“Remember the Future”
Philippians 3:7-21

Prayer of Confession
Our Father,
we are slow to learn,
and prone to forget we are your children;
choosing instead to live as orphans.
Our hearts lack mercy,
our minds are burdened with fear,
and we often live blind and deaf to your truth.
Take the scales from our eyes,
open our ears,
and penetrate our hearts of unbelief,
that you may be our highest joy.
Through Jesus. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

— Isaiah 55:7

The Lord’s Supper

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
Let us love and sing and wonder
Let us praise the Savior’s name
He has hushed the law’s loud thunder
He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame

Let us love the Lord who bought us
Pitied us when enemies
Called us by his grace and taught us
Gave us ears and gave us eyes

He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He presents our souls to God

Let us wonder, grace and justice
Join and point to mercy’s store
When through grace in Christ our trust is
Justice smiles and asks no more

He who washed us with his blood
He who washed us with his blood
He who washed us with his blood
Has secured our way to God

Let us praise, and join the chorus
Of the saints enthroned on high
Here they trusted him before us
Now their praises fill the sky

He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He has washed us with his blood
He will bring us home to God

Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father
And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be
World without end
Amen, amen
