WORSHIP – August 26, 2018

Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
Sing joyfully to the Lord.
Praise the Lord with the harp;
make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.

We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.

—based on Psalm 33

Unstoppable God
Heaven thundered
And the world was born

Life begins and ends in the dust you formed

Faith commanded
And the mountains moved

Fear is losing ground to our hope in you

Unstoppable God
Let your glory go on and on

Impossible things
In your name they shall be done

Freedom conquered
All our chains undone

Sin defeated, Jesus has overcome

Mercy triumphed
When the third day dawned

Darkness was denied when the stone was gone

Unstoppable God
Let your glory go on and on

Impossible things
In your name they shall be done

Unstoppable God
Let your glory go on and on

Impossible things
In your name they shall be done

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable

We’ll shout your praise forevermore
Jesus, our God, unstoppable

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable

We’ll shout your praise forevermore
Jesus, our God, unstoppable

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable

We’ll shout your praise forevermore
Jesus, our God, unstoppable

Nothing shall be impossible
Your kingdom reigns unstoppable

We’ll shout your praise forevermore
Jesus, our God, unstoppable

Unstoppable God
Let your glory go on and on

Impossible things
In your name they shall be done

Unstoppable God
Let your glory go on and on

Impossible things
In your name they shall be done

King of Glory
Lift up your gaze, be lifted up
Tell everyone how great the love

The love come down from heaven’s gate
To kiss the earth with hope and grace

Sing, who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty

Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty

Lift up your hands, be lifted up
Let the redeemed declare the love

We bow down at heaven’s gate
To kiss the feet of hope and grace

Sing, who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty

Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty

There is one God, he is holy
There is one Lord over everything

There is one King, he is Jesus
King of glory, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

You are the King of glory
The Lord, strong and mighty

One and Only
Who spoke and taught the sun to rise
Whose lips proclaimed the birth of light

Who sparked the kindling of stars
And set the fire in our hearts

Who sang as planets learned their dance
Who poured the oceans from his hands

Whose breath awakened life from dust
And leaves me breathless at his touch

Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours

How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours and yours alone

Who is this man upon a cross
Who left his throne to ransom us

Who died to save us at our worst
And rose to give us heaven’s best

Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours

How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours

My Savior, Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours

How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours and yours alone

We will watch the bridegroom come
And heaven breaking like the dawn

All dressed in white, our shame is gone
We’re free to dance before your throne

Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours

How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours

My Jesus, one and only
Great and holy, we are yours

How our hearts race at your glory
Lord almighty, we are yours and yours alone

Prayer for the People, the City, and the Nations

Gifts — Deliverance
Your love is a flood and I swim deep when the tide is up
Oh, would you flood me too

Saltwater in my blood has made me taste sweet to the world
Oh, and you taste sweet too

This is my deliverance
Hands held high as you deliver it, oh

You have made me a child of God

My feet on the ground and my heart in heaven
I am bread made without the leaven, oh

You have made me a child of God

I lay in the sand with sweet forgiveness in my hand
Oh, as a gift from you

Your love floods my brain, this gray cranium won’t be the same
No, where I’ve been won’t do

This is my deliverance
Hands held high as you deliver it, oh

You have made me a child of God

My feet on the ground and my heart in heaven
I am bread made without the leaven, oh

You have made me a child of God

You have made me a child of God

You have made me a child of God

And I won’t go
’Til I know

That you have sown all you have in me, yeah

This is my deliverance
Hands held high as you deliver it, oh

You have made me a child of God

My feet on the ground and my heart in heaven,
I am bread made without the leaven, oh

You have made me a child of God

You have made me a child of God

You have made me a child of God, oh

You have made me a child of God

King of My Heart
Let the King of my heart
Be the mountain where I run

The fountain I drink from
Oh, he is my song

Let the King of my heart
Be the shadow where I hide

The ransom for my life
Oh, he is my song

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

Let the King of my heart
Be the wind inside my sails

The anchor in the waves
Oh, he is my song

Let the King of my heart
Be the fire inside my veins

The echo of my days
Oh, he is my song

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You’re never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

You are good, good, oh, oh
You are good, good, oh, oh

Sermon
“The Curious Gift”
Romans 14:12-23

Prayer of Confession
Father, we confess our sins before you now.
Forgive us for allowing the good things in our lives
to become ultimate things;
for our indifference towards our relationship with you;
for letting things other than our union with Christ
in his death and resurrection define us;
for losing sight of the fact that
we are your sons and daughters.
We are thankful that you invite us to confess our sins
with the knowledge that
you do not deal with us according to our iniquities,
nor reward us according to our transgressions;
that your lovingkindness knows no limits;
that your compassion toward those who trust in you is great;
that you are the One who removes all our flaws and failures
as far as the east is from the west.
All this is ours in Christ and we thank you.
Through him, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
There is now no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.

— Romans 8:1 & 2

This is Amazing Grace
Who breaks the power of sin and darkness
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger

The King of Glory, the King above all kings

Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder
Who leaves us breathless in awe and wonder

The King of Glory, the King above all kings

This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love

That you would take my place
That you would bear my cross

You laid down your life
That I would be set free

O, Jesus I sing for all that you’ve done for me

Who brings our chaos back into order
Who makes the orphan a son and daughter

The King of Glory, the King of Glory

Who rules the nations with truth and justice
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance

The King of Glory, the King above all kings

This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love

That you would take my place
That you would bear my cross

You laid down your life
That I would be set free

O, Jesus I sing for all that you’ve done for me

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy, worthy, worthy

This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love

That you would take my place
That you would bear my cross

You laid down your life
That I would be set free

Rejoice
Come and stand before your Maker
Full of wonder, full of fear

Come behold his power and glory
Yet with confidence draw near

For the one who holds the heavens
And commands the stars above
Is the God who bends to bless us
With an unrelenting love

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands
And raise your voice
He is worthy of all praise

Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King
And with trembling, rejoice

We are children of the promise
The beloved of the Lord
Won with everlasting kindness
Bought with sacrificial blood

Bringing reconciliation
To a world that longs to know
The affections of a Father
Who will never let them go

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands
And raise your voice
He is worthy of all praise

Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King
And with trembling, rejoice

All our sickness, all our sorrows
Jesus carried up the hill
He has walked this path before us
He is walking with us still

Turning tragedy to triumph
Turning agony to praise
There is blessing in the battle
So take heart and stand amazed

Rejoice!
When you cry to him
He hears your voice
He will wipe away your tears

Rejoice!
In the midst of suffering
He will help you sing…

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands
And raise your voice
He is worthy of all praise

Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King
And with trembling, rejoice

Christ is Risen
Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame

But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to him who showed great love

And bled for us
Freely you’ve bled for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven’s will

No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown
No burden great can hold you down

In strength you reign
Forever let your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

O, death, where is your sting?
O, hell, where is your victory?

O, church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead, he’s alive, he’s alive

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again

Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Prayer for the People, the City, and the Nations

Gifts — Once and For All
God I give you all I can today
These scattered ashes that I hid away

I lay them all at your feet

From the corners of my deepest shame
The empty places where I’ve worn your name

Show me the love I say I believe

Help me to lay it down
O Lord, I lay it down

O, let this be where I die
My Lord with thee crucified

Be lifted high as my kingdoms fall
Once and for all, once and for all

There is victory in my Savior’s loss
In the crimson flowing from the cross

Pour over me, pour over me

O let this be where I die
My Lord with thee crucified

Be lifted high as my kingdoms fall
Once and for all, once and for all

O Lord, I lay it down
O Lord, I lay it down

Help me to lay it down
O Lord, I lay it down

O let this be where I die
My Lord with thee crucified

Be lifted high as my kingdoms fall
Once and for all, once and for all

Once and for all, once and for all

Fairest Lord Jesus
Fairest Lord Jesus
Ruler of all nature

Son of God and Son of man

Thee will I cherish
Thee will I honor

Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown

Fair are the meadows
Fairer still the woodlands

Robed in the blooming garb of spring

Jesus is fairer
Jesus is purer

Who makes the woeful heart to sing

Fair is the sunshine
Fairer still the moonlight

And all the twinkling starry host

Jesus shines brighter
Jesus shines purer

Than all the angels heaven can boast

Beautiful Savior
Lord of the nations

Son of God and Son of man

Glory and honor
Praise, adoration

Now and forevermore be thine

Sermon
“The Law of Love, Pt. 2”
Romans 13:11-14

Prayer of Confession
Lord God, have mercy on us and forgive our sins.
Make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may seek
to console, understand, and love those around us,
until you return to make all things new. Amen.

—based on a prayer attributed to St. Francis (1182-1226)

Assurance of Pardon
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;
he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

— Psalm 103:8-12

The Lord’s Supper

Nothing But The Blood
To the sinners ears it may sound strange
That freedom could be found through death and pain

Why sinless perfection took the blame
But hallelujah

For our pardon it would take the cross
Salvation paid for at the highest cost

Our redemption gained at Heaven’s loss
Oh hallelujah

What can wash away my sin
Nothing but the blood, nothing but the blood

What can make me whole again
Nothing but the blood

There is nothing strong enough to stand
Against what love has done with outstretched hands

For now salvation flows for every man
Oh hallelujah

Whosoever calls upon this name
Will find their guilt and burden rolled away

They’ll rise up to their feet forever changed
Singing hallelujah

What can wash away my sin
Nothing but the blood, nothing but the blood

What can make me whole again
Nothing but the blood

Every chain and fetter broken
Just one drop can make us clean

There is nothing it can’t rescue and redeem

It has triumphed over darkness
Crushing every enemy

Bringing healing, bringing freedom, bringing peace

What can wash away my sin
Nothing but the blood, nothing but the blood

What can make me whole again
Nothing but the blood

What can wash away my sin
Nothing but the blood, nothing but the blood

What can make me whole again
Nothing but the blood

Oh the blood of Jesus

Turn your ear to Heaven
And hear the noise inside

The sound of angels awe
The sound of angels songs

This song of ours will rise

This love of ours will rise, will rise…

Blessed Be Your Name
Blessed be your name
In the land that is plentiful

Where your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be your name

Blessed be your name
When I’m found in the desert place

Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise

When the darkness closes in
Lord still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

Blessed be your name
When the sun’s shining down on me

When the world’s all as it should be
Blessed be your name

Blessed be your name
On the road marked with suffering

Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out
I’ll turn back to praise

When the darkness closes in
Lord still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away

My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be your name

You give and take away
You give and take away

My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be your name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name

Blessed be the name of the Lord

Prayer for the People, the City, and the Nations

Gifts — Grace Alone
I was an orphan lost at the fall
Running away when I’d hear you call

But Father you worked your will

I had no righteousness of my own
I had no right to draw near your throne

But Father you loved me still

And in love before you laid the world’s foundation
You predestined to adopt me as your own

You have raised me up so high above my station
I’m a child of God by grace and grace alone

You left your home to seek out the lost
You knew the great and terrible cost

But Jesus your face was set

I worked my fingers down to the bone
But nothing I did could ever atone

But Jesus you paid my debt

By your blood I have redemption and salvation
Lord you died that I might reap what you have sown

And you rose that I might be a new creation
I am born again by grace and grace alone

I was in darkness all of my life
I never knew the day from the night

But Spirit you made me see

I swore I knew the way on my own
Head full of rocks, a heart made of stone

But Spirit you moved in me

And at your touch my sleeping spirit was awakened
On my darkened heart the light of Christ has shone

Called into a kingdom that cannot be shaken
Heaven’s citizen by grace and grace alone

So I’ll stand in faith by grace and grace alone

I will run the race by grace and grace alone

I will slay my sin by grace and grace alone

I will reach the end by grace and grace alone

Your Name
As morning dawns and evening fades
You inspire songs of praise

That rise from earth to touch your heart
And glorify your name

Your name is a strong and mighty tower
Your name is a shelter like no other

Your name, let the nations sing it louder
For nothing has the power to save

But your name

Jesus, in your name we pray
Come and fill our hearts today

Lord, give us strength to live for you
And glorify your name

Your name is a strong and mighty tower
Your name is a shelter like no other

Your name, let the nations sing it louder
For nothing has the power to save

But your name

Your name is a strong and mighty tower
Your name is a shelter like no other

Your name, let the nations sing it louder
For nothing has the power to save

But your name is a strong and mighty tower
Your name is a shelter like no other

Your name, let the nations sing it louder
For nothing has the power to save

Through your Holy Spirit
Conceiving Christ the Son, Jesus our Savior

That we will rise again

For I believe in the name of Jesus

I believe in the saints’ communion
And in your holy church

I believe in the resurrection

The Lord’s Supper

For the Lamb
On a shameful day he died
In the sorrow of defeat

But forgiveness was his cry
As his blood ran down for me

How the Father’s heart was torn
As his only Son was slain

But the earth would soon rejoice
From the place where hope was lain

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

By his Spirit we are raised
To the fullness of new life

In a moment we’ll be changed
And forever glorified

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

Most high and lifted up
Be glorified forever

Jesus has overcome
Declare it now together

Most high and lifted up
Be glorified forever

Jesus has overcome
Declare it now together

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome the world
