WORSHIP – December 2, 2018

Advent Reading
Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in his word I hope;

my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel hope in the LORD!

For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption

—Psalm 33:20, 130:4-7

O Come All Ye Faithful
O come, all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant

O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem

Come and behold him
Born the King of angels

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him

O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Sing, choirs of angels
Sing in exultation

O sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above

Glory to God
All glory in the highest

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him

O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Yea, Lord, we greet thee
Born this happy morning

Jesus, to thee be all glory giv’n

Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him

O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Latin hymn; attr. John Francis Wade, 1751; tr. Frederick Oakeley, 1841 Tune, ADESTE FIDELES, John Francis Wade’s Cantus Diversi, 1751

Angels We Have Heard on High
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains

And the mountains in reply
Echo back their joyous strains

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

Shepherds, why this jubilee
Why your joyous strains prolong

Say what may the tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing

Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

See him in a manger laid
Whom the choirs of angels praise

Mary, Joseph, lend your aid
While our hearts in love we raise

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

Baptism {10:30 a.m. service}

The First Noel
The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay

In fields where they
Lay keeping their sheep

On a cold winter’s night
That was so deep

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far

And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord

That hath made heaven and earth of naught
And with his blood mankind hath bought

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

Prayer of Confession
Most merciful God, whose Son Jesus Christ
was tempted in every way, yet remained faultless,
we confess to you our sin.
We have hungered after that which does not satisfy,
and doubted your power to protect us.
Have mercy on us, forgive our lack of faith,
and restore to us the joy of our salvation.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

God With Us
You’ve come to bring peace, to be love
To be nearer to us

You’ve come to bring life, to be light
To shine brighter in us

Our Deliverer, you are Savior
In your presence we find our strength

Over everything, our redemption
God with us, you are God with us

You’ve come to be hope to this world
For your honor and name

You’ve come to take sin, to bear shame
And to conquer the grave

O Emmanuel, God with us

Our Deliverer, you are Savior
In your presence we find our strength

Over everything, our redemption
God with us, you are God with us

You are here, you are holy
We are standing in your glory

WORSHIP – November 25, 2018

For the Beauty of the Earth
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

For the beauty of the earth
For the glory of the skies

For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies

Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night

Hill and vale, and tree and flower
Sun and moon, and stars of light

Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

For the joy of human love
Brother, sister, parent, child

Friends on earth and friends above
For all gentle thoughts and mild

Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

For each perfect gift of thine
To our race so freely given

Graces human and divine
Peace on earth and joy in heaven

Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise

Rescuer
He’s our Rescuer
He’s our Rescuer

We are free from sin forevermore

Oh how sweet the sound
Oh how grace abounds

We will praise the Lord our Rescuer

There is good news for the captive
Good news for the shamed

There is good news
For the one who walked away

There is good news for the doubter
The one religion failed

For the good Lord has come to seek and save

He’s our Rescuer… hey!
He’s our Rescuer… hey!

We are free from sin forevermore

Oh how sweet the sound… hey!
Oh how grace abounds… hey!

We will praise the Lord our Rescuer

He is beauty for the blind man
Riches for the poor

He is friendship for the one the world ignores

He is pasture for the weary
Rest for those who strive

Oh the good Lord is the way, the truth, the life

Yes the good Lord is the way, the truth, the life

He’s our Rescuer… hey!
He’s our Rescuer… hey!

We are free from sin forevermore

Oh how sweet the sound… hey!
Oh how grace abounds… hey!

We will praise the Lord our Rescuer

So come and be chainless
Come and be fearless

Come to the foot of Calvary

There is redemption for every affliction
Here at the foot of Calvary

So come and be chainless
Come and be fearless

Come to the foot of Calvary

There is redemption for every affliction
Here at the foot of Calvary

He’s our Rescuer… hey!
He’s our Rescuer… hey!

We are free from sin forevermore

Oh how sweet the sound… hey!
Oh how grace abounds… hey!

10,000 Reasons
Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

The sun comes up
It’s a new day dawning

It’s time to sing your song again

Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me

Let me be singing
When the evening comes

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

You’re rich in love
And you’re slow to anger

Your name is great
And your heart is kind

For all your goodness
I will keep on singing

Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

And on that day
When my strength is failing

The end draws near
And my time has come

Still my soul will sing
Your praise unending

Ten thousand years
And then forevermore

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
Worship his holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul

O Come, O Come Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel

That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav’nly home

Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death’s dark shadows put to flight

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

O, come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind

O, bid our sad divisions cease
And be thyself our King of peace

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel

Sermon
“Loving Others Where They Are”
Acts 17:22-34

A Litany of Thanks
Great God, for all that is gracious in our lives,
revealing the image of Christ, we give you thanks.

For our daily food and drink,
our homes, our families, and our friends,
we give you thanks.

For minds to think, hearts to love,
and hands to serve, we give you thanks.

For health and strength to work,
and leisure to rest and play,
we give you thanks.

For the strength you provide in our weakness.

For the good you bring out of our pain,
and the grace you provide in our brokenness.

For the great mercies and promises of the gospel,
given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord;

To you, O God, be praise and glory. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
He does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

—Hebrew 10:9b-10
The Lord’s Supper

For the Lamb
On a shameful day he died
In the sorrow of defeat

But forgiveness was his cry
As his blood ran down for me

How the Father’s heart was torn
As his only Son was slain

But the earth would soon rejoice
From the place where hope was lain

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

By his Spirit we are raised
To the fullness of new life

In a moment we’ll be changed
And forever glorified

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

Most high and lifted up
Be glorified forever

Jesus has overcome
Declare it now together

Most high and lifted up
Be glorified forever

Jesus has overcome
Declare it now together

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome
Everlasting love has won

In eternal praise we will lift him up
For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome the world

For the Lamb has overcome the world

Rejoice
Come and stand before your Maker
Full of wonder, full of fear

Come behold his power and glory
Yet with confidence draw near

For the one who holds the heavens
And commands the stars above

Is the God who bends to bless us
With an unrelenting love

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands and raise your voice

He is worthy of all praise

Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King

And with trembling, rejoice!

We are children of the promise
The beloved of the Lord

Won with everlasting kindness
Bought with sacrificial blood

Bringing reconciliation
To a world that longs to know

The affections of a Father
Who will never let them go

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands and raise your voice

He is worthy of all praise

Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King

And with trembling, rejoice!

All our sickness, all our sorrows
Jesus carried up the hill

He has walked this path before us
He is walking with us still

Turning tragedy to triumph
Turning agony to praise

There is blessing in the battle
So take heart and stand amazed

Rejoice!
When you cry to him, he hears your voice

He will wipe away your tears

Rejoice!
In the midst of suffering, he will help you sing

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands and raise your voice

He is worthy of all praise

Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King

And with trembling, rejoice!

O Church of Christ, Invincible
O Church of Christ, invincible
The people of the Lord

Empowered by the Spirit’s breath
And nourished by his word

His covenant of grace will be
Our portion evermore

For he who called us will not change
Our help and our reward

O chosen people called by grace
The sons of Abraham

Who walk by faith and things unseen
And on his promise stand

That ev’ry nation of the earth
Will hear about this love

That causes broken hearts to heal
And pays our debts with blood

O Church of Christ in sorrow now
Where evil lies in wait

When trials and persecutions come
This light will never fade

For though the hordes of hell may rage
Their pow’r will not endure

Our times are in the Father’s hand
Our anchor is secure

O Church of Christ upon that day
When all are gathered in

When ev’ry tear is wiped away
With ev’ry trace of sin

Where justice truth and beauty shine
And death is passed away

Where God and man will dwell as one
For all eternity

Sermon
“He Himself Knew”
John 6:1-15

Prayer of Confession
Most holy and merciful Father,
we confess that we have sinned against you
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart, mind, and strength.
We have not fully loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We have not always had in us the mind of Christ.
You alone know how often we have grieved you
by wasting your gifts, and by wandering from your ways.
Forgive us, Father, and free us from our sin.
Renew in us the grace and strength of your Holy Spirit,
for the sake of your son, Jesus. Through him, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

— 1 John 1:5-7

The Lord’s Supper

Jesus Paid it All
I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small

Child of weakness watch and pray
Find in me thine all in all

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe

Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

Lord now indeed I find
Thy power and thine alone

Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe

Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

For nothing good have I
Whereby thy grace to claim

I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe

Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

And when before the throne
I stand in him complete

Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe

Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

Lion and the Lamb
He’s coming on the clouds
Kings and kingdoms will bow down

Every chain will break
As broken hearts declare his praise

For who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah

He’s roaring with power
And fighting our battles

And every knee will bow before him

Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain

For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains

And every knee will bow
Before the Lion and the Lamb

Every knee will bow before him

Open up the gate
Make way before the King of kings

The God who comes to save
Is here to set the captives free

For who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah

He’s roaring in power
And fighting our battles

And every knee will bow before him

Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain

For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains

And every knee will bow
Before the Lion and the Lamb

Every knee will bow before him

Who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Who can stop the Lord Almighty?

Who can stop the Lord?

Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah

I Sing the Mighty Power of God
I sing the mighty power of God
That made the mountains rise

That spread the flowing seas abroad
And built the lofty skies

I sing the wisdom that ordained
The sun to rule the day

The moon shines full at his command
And all the stars obey

I sing the goodness of the Lord
Who filled the earth with food

Who formed the creatures with his Word
And then pronounced them good

Lord, how thy wonders are displayed
Where’er I turn my eye

If I survey the ground I tread
Or gaze upon the sky

There’s not a plant or flower below
But makes thy glories known

And clouds arise, and tempests blow
By order from thy throne

While all that borrows life from thee
Is ever in thy care

And everywhere that man can be
Thou, God art present there

In your hands you hold the universe
At your feet, nations of the earth

All creation glorifies your name
All creation glorifies your name

Singing – holy, holy, holy is the Lord
Almighty, worthy, all the earth is filled

With your glory, glory
We give you glory, glory

Blessing, honor, glory, power
All our praise is yours forever

Sermon
“They Noticed a Bay”
Acts 27:21-44

Prayer of Confession
Father, we confess that we would rather
settle the score than love those who hurt us.
We confess that our hearts are often cold towards those who suffer,
and we are unwilling to move towards their pain.
We confess that we think more highly of ourselves than we ought,
and despise those who do not measure up to our standards.
Forgive our vindictive, callous, arrogant hearts;
cleanse us from all our unrighteousness; and by your Spirit,
free us to love others as we flee to Christ in faith.
Through Jesus. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
This is what the Lord Himself says to those who turn to him in faith, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

— Isaiah 1:18

To The Table
Hear the voice of love that’s calling
There’s a place that waits for you

And a friend who understands
Everything you’re going through

But you keep standing at a distance
In the shadows of your shame

But there’s a light of hope that’s shining
Won’t you come and take your place

And bring it all to the table
It’s nothing he ain’t seen before

For all your sin all your sorrow
And your sadness

There’s a Savior and he calls
Bring it all to the table

He can see the weight you carry
The fears that hold your heart

But through the cross you’ve been forgiven
You’re accepted as you are

So bring it all to the table
It’s nothing he ain’t seen before

For all your trials all your worries
And your burdens

There’s a Savior and he calls
Bring it all to the table

Bring it all

You can bring it all

Come on in, take your place
There’s no one who’s turned away

All you sinners, all you saints
Come right in and find your grace

Come on in, take your place
There’s no one who’s turned away

All you sinners, all you saints
Come right in and find your grace

And bring it all to the table
It’s nothing he ain’t seen before

For all your sin all your sorrow
And your sadness

There’s a Savior and he calls
Bring it all to the table

Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father
And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost

As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be

World without end
Amen, amen
