Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High,
to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night.

—Psalm 92:1-2 (NIV)

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Come, thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I’m fixed upon it
Mount of God’s unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by thy help I’m come
And I hope, by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandr’ing from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed his precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let that grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wand’ring heart to thee

Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above

O that day, when freed from sinning
I shall see thy lovely face
Clothed then in blood washed linen
How I’ll sing thy sovereign grace

Come, my Lord, no longer tarry
Take my ransomed soul away
Send thine angels, now to carry
Me to realms of endless day

Robert Robinson, 1758. Asahel Nettleton, 1825 CCL 241710

Enough
All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

You are my supply, my breath of life
Still more awesome than I know
You are my reward, worth living for
Still more awesome than I know

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

You’re my sacrifice of greatest price
Still more awesome than I know
You’re my coming King, you are ev’rything
Still more awesome than I know

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you…

More than all I want
More than all I need
You are more than enough for me

More than all I know
More than all I can say
You are more than enough

All of you is more than enough for all of me
For ev’ry thirst and ev’ry need
You satisfy me with your love
And all I have in you is more than enough

Gifts – O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
O love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be

My life is not my own, it’s yours
My life is not my own, it’s yours

O light that follows all my way
I yield my flickering torch to you
My heart restores its borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be

So light a fire in my heart, I’ll burn for you
So light a fire in my heart, I’ll burn for you

O joy that seeks me through the pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not in vain
That morn shall tearless be

So anoint me with joy, joyful I will be
So anoint me with joy, joyful I will be

O cross that’s lifting up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life’s glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

And we will sing: holy, holy is the King of kings
And we will sing: holy, holy is the King of kings

A Profession of Jesus Christ
As followers of Jesus Christ, living in this world—
which some seek to control, but which others view with despair—
we declare with joy and trust:

Our world belongs to God!

From the beginning, through all the crises of our times,
until his kingdom fully comes, God keeps covenant forever.

Our world belongs to him!
God is King! Let the earth be glad!
Christ is Victor; his rule has begun. Hallelujah!
The Spirit is at work, renewing the creation. Praise the Lord!

—Our World Belongs to God, st. 1-2

A Shield About Me
Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me
You’re my glory
You’re the lifter of my head

Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me
You’re my glory
You’re the lifter of my head

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
You’re the lifter of my head

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
You’re the lifter of my head

Holy, Holy. Holy
Holy, holy, holy
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to thee

Holy, holy, holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity

Holy, holy, holy
Though the darkness hide thee
Though the eye of sinful man
Thy glory may not see

Only thou art holy
There is none beside thee
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity

Holy, holy, holy
Lord God Almighty
All thy works shall praise thy name
In earth, and sky, and sea

Holy, holy, holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
You’re the lifter of my head

Sermon
“Telling Ourselves the Truth”
Acts 5:1-11

Prayer of Confession
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory
and might forever and ever!”
Holy God and Loving Father,
you alone are worthy of worship and praise.
And you alone satisfy the longings of our hearts,
have mercy on us and forgive our sins.
Renew us and mold us into a holy community,
that reflects the love, justice, beauty and peace
that will one day come,
when you make heaven and earth one.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

What the Lord Has Done in Me
Hosanna, hosanna
To the Lamb that was slain
Hosanna, hosanna
Jesus died and rose again

Let the weak say I am strong
Let the poor say I am rich
Let the blind say I can see
It’s what the Lord has done in me

Into the river I will wade
There my sins are washed away
From the heaven’s mercy stream
Of the Savior’s love for me

Hosanna, hosanna
To the Lamb that was slain
Hosanna, hosanna
Jesus died and rose again

I will rise from waters deep
Into the saving arms of God
I will sing salvation songs
Jesus Christ has set me free

Hosanna, hosanna
To the Lamb that was slain
Hosanna, hosanna
Jesus died and rose again

Hosanna, hosanna
To the Lamb that was slain
Hosanna, hosanna
Jesus died and rose again

Call to Worship
Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.
Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the LORD, O my soul.

—Psalm 103:21-22, NIV (1984)

And Can It Be
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood
Died he for me who caused his pain
For me who him to death pursued

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me

He left his Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite his grace
Emptied himself of all but love
And bled for Adam’s helpless race

’Tis mercy all, immense and free
For O my God, it found out me

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me
(repeat)

Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light

My chains fell off, my heart was free
I rose, went forth, and followed thee

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me
(repeat)

No condemnation now I dread
Jesus, and all in him, is mine
Alive in him, my living head
And clothed in righteousness divine

Bold I approach the eternal throne
And claim the crown, through Christ my own

Amazing love! How can it be
That thou, my God, should die for me
(repeat)

With all your mind

Love the Lord your God
With all your heart
With all your soul
With all your mind and
With all your strength

I will serve the Lord
With all my heart
With all my soul
With all my mind and
With all my strength
(repeat)

With all my heart
With all my soul
With all my mind
With all my strength

I will serve the Lord
With all my heart
With all my soul
With all my mind and
With all my strength

With all my heart

A Profession of Jesus Christ
This Lord, our God, the Word of God, the Word made flesh,
the Son of the Father, the Son of God, the Son of man,
exalted that he might create us,
humbled that he might recreate us.
Walked among men and suffering what is human.
Let every sigh be a panting after Christ,
let that most beautiful One,
who loved even the ugly that he might make them beautiful,
let him be longed for.
Hurry to him alone.

Revelation Song
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Holy, holy is he
Sing a new song to him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Clothed in rainbows of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor
Strength and glory and power be
To you the only wise King

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder
At the mention of your name
Jesus your name is power
Breath and living water
Such a marvelous myst’ry…

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

“The Graced Community”
Acts 4:32-37

Prayer of Confession
Gracious Father and God,
you are our Strong Deliverer and Mighty King.
Be merciful and forgive our sin.
Restore our faith and renew our strength.
Fill us with your Spirit.
Teach us to love and obey your Son.
And enable us to live freely and joyfully
in the promise of what will one day be,
in spite of our weaknesses and fears.
That our world will know that you are the God
who loosens chains and sets prisoners free.

Come As You Are
Come out of sadness from wherever you’ve been
Come broken-hearted, let rescue begin
Come find your mercy, O sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens, lay down your shame
All who are broken, lift up your face
O wanderer come home, you’re not too far
So lay down your hurt, lay down your heart

Come as you are

There’s hope for the hopeless
And all those who’ve strayed
Come sit at the table, come taste the grace
There’s rest for the weary, rest that endures
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t cure

So lay down your burdens, lay down your shame
All who are broken, lift up your face
O wanderer come home, you’re not too far
So lay down your hurt, lay down your heart

Come as you are

There’s joy for the morning, O sinner be still
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens, lay down your shame
All who are broken, lift up your face
O wanderer come home, you’re not too far
So lay down your hurt, lay down your heart

Come as you are

Call to Worship
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!
Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the LORD, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

—Psalm 100:1-3 (ESV)

O For a Thousand
O, for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of his grace

Jesus, the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears
‘Tis life and health and peace

He breaks the power of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoners free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

He speaks and listening to his voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful broken hearts rejoice
The humble poor believe

My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of thy name

Holy
What heart could hold the weight of your love
And know the heights of your great worth
What eyes could look on your glorious face
Shining like the sun

Your name alone has pow’r to raise us
Your light will shine when all else fades
Our eyes will look on your glorious face
Shining like the sun

You are holy, holy, holy
God most high and God most worthy
You are holy, holy, holy
Jesus you are, Jesus you are

And you will come again in glory
To judge the living and the dead
All eyes will look on your glorious face
Shining like the sun
Who is like you, God

You are holy, holy, holy
God most high and God most worthy
You are holy, holy, holy
Jesus you are, Jesus you are

Who shall we say you are
You’re the living God
Who shall we say you are
You’re the Great I AM
The highest name of all
You’re all you say you are

You are holy, holy, holy

A Profession of Faith
What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things
and still upholds them by his providence?

We can be patient in adversity,
thankful in prosperity,
and with a view to the future
we can have a firm confidence
in our faithful God and Father
that no creature shall separate us from His love;
for all creatures are so completely in His hand
that without his will they cannot so much as move.

Prayer of Confession
Faithful God and Loving Father,
hear our cry and forgive our sin.
Be merciful and cleanse our unrighteousness.
Take our broken lives and restore us,
that we may serve you with joy,
and enter into the pain and suffering

the discouraged will find hope,
the lost will be found,
and the wounded will be made whole,

Mercy
I will kneel in the dust
At the foot of the cross
Where mercy paid for me

Where the wrath I deserve
It is gone, it has passed
Your blood has hidden me

Mercy, mercy as endless as the sea
I’ll sing your hallelujah for all eternity

We will lift up the cup
And the bread we will break
Remembering your love

We were fallen from grace
But you took all our shame
And nailed it to a cross

Mercy, mercy as endless as the sea
I’ll sing your hallelujah for all eternity

Mercy, mercy as endless as the sea
I’ll sing your hallelujah for all eternity

May I never lose the wonder
O the wonder of your mercy
May I sing your hallelujah
Hallelujah, amen

May I never lose the wonder
O the wonder of your mercy
May I sing your hallelujah
Hallelujah, amen

May I never lose the wonder
O the wonder of your mercy
May I sing your hallelujah

The Lighting of the Fourth Advent Candle
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

Therefore he shall give them up until the time
when she who is in labor has given birth;

Then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel.

And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.

And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.

And he shall be their peace.

—Micah 5:2-5a

Advent Prayer
Come, Lord Jesus.
Be born to us.
Give us faith see you,
and to live in anticipation
of the day you will return,
to establish your Kingdom in justice and peace.
Deepen our love for you, for one another,
and for this world that you created to be good,
until you come and make it new. Amen.

Angels We Have Heard On High
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echo back their joyous strains

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

Shepherds, why this jubilee
Why your joyous strains prolong
Say what may the tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

See him in a manger laid
Whom the choirs of angels praise
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid
While our hearts in love we raise

Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan’s power
When we were gone astray

O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

From God our heavenly Father
A blessèd angel came
And unto certain shepherds
Brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by name

O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

“Fear not, then,” said the angel
“Let nothing you afright
This day is born a Savior
Of a pure virgin bright
To free all those who trust in him
From Satan’s power and might”

O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises
All you within this place
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace
This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface

O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

See the star shine on the virgin foretold
Angels sing and light up the sky
Hope rings out in a newborn’s cry
Swing wide you ancient gates for Christ is born today

Prepare him room
Prepare him room
Let the King of Glory enter in

God with us, the promise has come to be
This the one the prophets were longing to see
In the darkness a blazing light
To the hungry the words of life
His kingdom now is near for those with ears to hear

Prepare him room
Prepare him room
Let the King of Glory enter in

Prepare him room
Prepare him room
Let the King of Glory enter in

Oh our hearts, as busy as Bethlehem
Hear him knock, don’t say there’s no room in the inn
Through the cradle, cross and grave
See the love of God displayed
Now he’s risen and he reigns.
Praise the name above all names

Prepare him room
Prepare him room

The First Noel
The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds
In fields as they lay

In fields where they
Lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter’s night
That was so deep

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

This star drew nigh to the northwest
O’er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both stop and stay
Right over the place where Jesus lay

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made heaven and earth of naught
And with his blood mankind hath bought

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel

Prayer of Confession
God of salvation, in Christ you have done great things—
and our hearts are filled with joy.
By your power you lifted us out of the wasteland of sin
and brought us with joy and laughter into your kingdom.
We confess that often we try to replace your gift with our own efforts.
We try to complete what is already perfect;
we try to add to what is already full;
we try to earn what we already have.
Forgive our foolishness.
Help us to live grateful lives in return.
For Jesus’ sake alone, Amen.

Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision
O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me
Save that thou art

Thou my best thought
By day or by night
Waking or sleeping
Thy presence my light

Be thou my wisdom
And thou my true word
I ever with thee
And thou with me, Lord

Thou my great Father
I thy true son
Thou in me dwelling
And I with thee one

Riches I heed not
Nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine inheritance
Now and always

Thou and thou only
First in my heart
High King of heaven
My treasure thou art

High King of heaven
My victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys
O bright heav’ns Son

Heart of my own heart
Whatever befall
Still be my vision
O ruler of all

The Lighting of the Third Advent Candle
Shake yourself from the dust and arise; be seated,
O Jerusalem; loose the bonds from your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion.

For thus says the LORD: “You were sold for nothing,
and you shall be redeemed without money.”

“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife,
for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,
for he will save his people from their sins.”

—Isaiah 52:2-3, Matthew 1:20b-21

Advent Prayer
God of Compassion and Father of all Mercy,
with this broken world, we long for your presence,
and the unconditional embrace of your love.
Teach us to give that which we have received,
to love that which you love,
and to eagerly await the coming of Christ,
with grateful and loving hearts,
through Jesus. Amen.

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
It came upon the midnight clear
That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold

Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
From heaven’s all gracious King
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing

Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled
And still their heavenly music floats
O’er all the weary world

Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing
And ever o’er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing

O ye beneath life’s crushing load
Whose forms are bending low
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow

Look now, for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing
O, rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing

For lo, the days are hastening on
By prophets seen of old
When with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold

When the new heaven and earth shall own The Prince of Peace, their King
And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Hark the herald angels sing

Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a virgin’s womb

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel

Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King

Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace
Hail the Son of Righteousness
Light and life to all he brings
Ris’n with healing in his wings

Mild he lays his glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth

Hark! The herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King

Silent Night
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia
Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

The Lighting of the Second Advent Candle
Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.

Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;

Your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.

—Isaiah 40:4, 58:8, 60:3

O Come All Ye Faithful
O come, all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem
Come and behold him
Born the King of angels

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Sing, choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
O sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above
Glory to God
All glory in the highest

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Yea, Lord, we greet thee
Born this happy morning
Jesus, to thee be glory giv’n
Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing

O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Latin hymn; attr. John Francis Wade, 1751; tr. Frederick Oakeley, 1841

Joy to the World
Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as, far as, the curse is found

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness
And wonders of his love
And wonders of his love
And wonders, wonders of his love

Advent Prayer
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
ever faithful to your promises
and ever close to your church:
the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior’s coming
and looks forward with longing
to his return at the end of time.
Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness
that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope
that his presence will bestow,
for he is Lord for ever and ever. Through Jesus. Amen.

What Child Is This
What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary

Why lies he in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent word is pleading

Nails, spear shall pierce him through
The cross be borne for me, for you
Hail, hail the word made flesh
The Babe the Son of Mary

So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone him

Raise, raise the song on high
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born
The Babe, the Son of Mary

Prayer of Confession
Lord, we have not kept watch for you.
We have been occupied with our own concerns.
We have not waited to find your will for us.
We have not noticed the needs of the people around us.
We have not acknowledged the love that has been shown to us.

Jesus Paid It All
I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness watch and pray
Find in me thine all in all

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

Lord now indeed I find
Thy power and thine alone
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

For nothing good have I
Whereby thy grace to claim
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

And when before the throne
I stand in him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat

Jesus paid it all
All to him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

“Come to me,
all who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you,
and learn from me,

and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light.”

Come Ye Sinners
Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus, ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, joined with power

He is able, he is able
He is willing, doubt no more

Come ye needy, come, and welcome
God’s free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Every grace that brings you nigh

Without money, without money
Come to Jesus Christ and buy

Come, ye weary, heavy laden
Bruised and broken by the fall
If you tarry ’til you’re better
You will never come at all

Not the righteous, not the righteous
Sinners Jesus came to call

Let not conscience make you linger
Nor of fitness fondly dream
All the fitness he requires
Is to feel your need of him

This he gives you, this he gives you
‘Tis the Spirit’s rising beam

Lo! The incarnate God, ascended
Pleads the merit of his blood
Venture on him, venture wholly
Let no other trust intrude

None but Jesus, none but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good

An Affirmation of God’s Love
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness…
he will have compassion according to
the abundance of his steadfast love…

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine
or nakedness or danger or sword?
As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors
through him who loved us.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons,

neither the present nor the future,

nor any powers, neither height nor depth,

nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

—Lamentations 3:22-23, 32b (ESV), Romans 8:35-39, NIV

Fairest Lord Jesus
Fairest Lord Jesus
Ruler of all nature
Son of God and Son of man

Thee will I cherish
Thee will I honor
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown

Fair are the meadows
Fairer still the woodlands
Robed in the blooming garb of spring

Jesus is fairer
Jesus is purer
Who makes the woeful heart to sing

Fair is the sunshine
Fairer still the moonlight
And all the twinkling starry host

Jesus shines brighter
Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast

Beautiful Savior
Lord of the nations
Son of God and Son of man

Glory and honor
Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be thine

Sermon
“The Compassionate Creator — The Mercy of God in the Brokenness of Man”
Jonah 4:5-11

Prayer of Confession
Mighty God and Compassionate Father,
you are ‘merciful and slow to anger,
abounding in steadfast love.’
You know our weak resolves and unrighteous deeds,
our evil thoughts and impure desires,
have mercy on us and forgive our sin.
Cleanse our hearts and restore us to the sweet fellowship
you created for us to enjoy with you,
with one another, and with our world.
Give us longing hearts for you,
until heaven and earth are one,
and you make all things new.
Through Jesus. Amen.

Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
Tis grace has brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home

When we’ve been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun

This Is My Father’s World
This is my Father’s world
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres

This is my Father’s world
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas
His hand the wonders wrought

This is my Father’s world
The birds their carols raise
The morning light, the lily white
Declare their maker’s praise

This is my Father’s world
He shines in all that’s fair
In the rustling grass I hear him pass
He speaks to me everywhere

This is my Father’s world
O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong
God is the ruler yet

This is my Father’s world
Why should my heart be sad
The Lord is King, let the heavens ring
God reigns, let the earth be glad

Gifts — Jesus Loves Me
I was lost, I was in chains
The world had a hold on me
My heart was a stone
I was covered in shame when he came for me

I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from his presence
I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from his arms

Jesus, he loves me, he loves me, he is for me
Jesus, how can it be, he loves me, he is for me

It was a fire, deep in my soul
I’ll never be the same
I stepped out of the dark and into the light
When he called my name

I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from his presence
I couldn’t run, couldn’t run from his arms

Jesus, he loves me, he loves me, he is for me
Jesus, how can it be, he loves me, he is for me

He holds the stars and he holds my heart
With healing hands that bear the scars
The rugged cross where he died for me
My only hope, my everything

A Litany of God’s Pardoning Grace
We believe that God has entrusted the church
with the message of reconciliation
in and through Jesus Christ,
that the church is called to be the salt of the earth
and the light of the world,
that the church is called blessed
because it is a peacemaker,
that the church is witness both by word and by deed
to the new heaven and the new earth
in which righteousness dwells.

—From the Belhar Confession

The Earth is Yours

Your voice it thunders
The oaks start twisting
The forest sounds with cedars breaking

The waters see you
And start their writhing
From the depths a song is rising

Now it’s rising from the ground…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Your voice it thunders
The ground is shaking
The mighty mountains now are trembling

Creation sees you
And starts composing
The fields and trees, they start rejoicing

Now it’s rising from the ground
Now it’s rising from the ground
Hear us crying out…

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours and singing

Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord
The earth is yours
The earth is yours
The earth is yours

Holy, holy, holy
Lord God Almighty
All thy works shall praise thy name
In earth, and sky, and sea

Holy, holy, holy
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed Trinity

“Consumed – When God’s Will & Our Passions Clash”
Jonah 4:1-4

Prayer of Confession
Dear Jesus, Friend to Sinners,
be merciful to us, for this is what we are.
Take the broken offering of our imperfect hearts,
and weak resolves,
and graciously forgive our sins.
Where we are restless, bring peace.
Where our hearts are cold, melt the indifference away.
Free us from self-serving passions.
Open our hearts to the weak and the outcast.
Enable us to love as you have loved us,
and to serve as you have served,
change us and free us to love,
follow and obey you, for the sake of this world
that you created to be good.
Amen.

Come to Me
Weary burdened wanderer
There is rest for thee
At the feet of Jesus
In his love so free

Listen to his message
Words of life, forever blessed
O, thou heavy laden
Come to me, come and rest

There is freedom, taste and see
Hear the call, “Come to me”
Run into his arms of grace
Your burden carried, he will take

Bring him all thy burdens
All thy guilt and sin
Mercy’s door is open
Rise up and enter

There is freedom, taste and see
Hear the call, “Come to me”
Run into his arms of grace
Your burden carried, he will take

Jesus there is waiting
Patiently for thee
Hear him gently calling
“Come, oh, come to me”
“Come, oh, come to me”
“Come, oh, come to me”

There is freedom, taste and see
Hear the call, “Come to me”

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
Glorious things of thee are spoken
Zion, city of our God
He, whose word cannot be broken
Formed thee for his own abode

On the Rock of Ages founded
What can shake thy sure repose
With salvation’s walls surrounded
Thou mayst smile at all thy foes

See, the streams of living waters
Springing from eternal love
Well supply thy sons and daughters
And all fear of want remove

Who can faint while such a river
Ever will their thirst assuage
Grace which like the Lord, the giver
Never fails from age to age

Blest inhabitants of Zion
Washed in our Redeemer’s blood
Jesus, whom our souls rely on
Makes us monarchs, priests to God

Us, by his great love, he raises
Rulers over self to reign
And as priests his solemn praises
We for thankful offering bring

Savior, if of Zion’s city
I through grace a member am
Let the world deride or pity
I will glory in thy name

Fading is the worldling’s pleasure
All his boasted pomp and show
Solid joys and lasting treasure
None but Zion’s children know

A Responsive Reading
Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.

He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

—Psalm 33:3-9 (ESV)

O Praise Him
Turn your ear to Heaven
And hear the noise inside
The sound of angels awe
The sound of angels songs

And all this for a King
We could join and sing
All to Christ the King

How constant, how divine
This song of ours will rise
O, how constant how divine
This love of ours will rise, will rise…

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy

Turn your gaze to Heaven
And raise a joyous noise
The sound of salvation come
The sound of rescued ones

And all this for a King
Angels join to sing
All for Christ our King

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy
(repeat)

How infinite and sweet
This love so rescuing
O, how infinitely sweet
This great love that has redeemed
As one, we sing…

Hallelujah, hallelujah
He is holy, he is holy

O praise him, O praise him
He is holy, he is holy

The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*‘Catholic’ is the historic word meaning ‘universal’ – it therefore refers to the entirety of believers throughout history.

This I Believe (The Creed)
Our Father everlasting
The all creating One
God almighty

Through your Holy Spirit
Conceiving Christ the Son
Jesus our savior

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three in One

I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

Our Judge and our Defender
Suffered and crucified
Forgiveness is in you

Descended into darkness
You rose in glorious life
Forever seated high

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three in One

I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

I believe in you
I believe you rose again
I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord

I believe in life eternal
I believe in the virgin birth
I believe in the saints’ communion
And in your holy Church

I believe in the resurrection
When Jesus comes again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is Three in One

I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

Revelation Song
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Holy, holy is he
Sing a new song to him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Clothed in rainbows of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor
Strength and glory and power be
To you the only wise King

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder
At the mention of your name
Jesus your name is power
Breath and living water
Such a marvelous myst’ry…

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of kings
You are my ev’rything and I will adore you

Children Dismissed for Children’s Church

Sermon
“Arise or Flee, Redux – Rediscovering & Obeying God’s Word”
Jonah 2:10-3:4

Prayer of Confession
Father in Heaven,
you are the Giver of all grace,
and your love endures forever.
Be merciful to us and forgive.
Our sins are too great for us to bear.
You have made us your children,
but we act like orphans.
Cause the tenderness of Christ,
that will not snuff out a smoldering wick,
or break a bent reed,
to fill our hearts and minds,
and draw us back to you.
Renew in us a steadfast spirit.
And break our hearts for this broken world,
that you will one day make new.
Through Jesus. Amen

The Wonderful Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

See from his head, his hands, his feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die
And find that I may truly live

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
All who gather here
By grace draw near and bless your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die
And find that I may truly live

O the wonderful cross
O the wonderful cross
All who gather here
By grace draw near and bless your name

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

Glory be to the Father

Welcome & Announcements

Call to Worship
I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;
with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,
your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.

—Psalm 89:1, 5 (NRSV)

Christ is Risen
Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely you’ve bled for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven’s will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown
No burden great can hold you down
In strength you reign
Forever let your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

O, death, where is your sting
O, hell, where is your victory
O, church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead, he’s alive, he’s alive

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Majestic
O Lord, our Lord how majestic
Is your name in all the earth
O Lord, our Lord how majestic
Is your name in all the earth

The heavens declare your greatness
The oceans cry out to you
The mountains they bow down before you
So I’ll join with the earth
And I’ll give my praise to you

O Lord, our Lord how majestic
Is your name in all the earth
O Lord, our Lord how majestic
Is your name in all the earth

The heavens declare your greatness
The oceans cry out to you
The mountains they bow down before you
So I’ll join with the earth and I’ll sing

The heavens declare your greatness
The oceans cry out to you
The mountains they bow down before you
So I’ll join with the earth
And I’ll give my praise to you

I will worship you
I will worship you
We will worship you
We will worship you

The heavens declare your greatness
The oceans cry out to you
The mountains they bow down before you
So I’ll join with the earth and I’ll sing

The heavens declare your greatness
The oceans cry out to you
The mountains they bow down before you
So I’ll join with the earth
And I’ll give my praise to you

A Confession of God’s Faithfulness
What does it benefit us to know that God has created all things and still upholds them by his providence?

We can be patient in adversity, thankful in prosperity,
and with a view to the future we can have a firm confidence
in our faithful God and Father
that no creature shall separate us from his love;
for all creatures are so completely in his hand
that without his will
they cannot so much as move.

—from The Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 28

Our God Alone
Who formed the mountains
And filled the oceans
Our God alone, our God alone

Who took the dust
And breathed life in us
Our God alone, our God alone

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Who came from heaven
For our redemption
Our God alone, our God alone

Who died for sin
That we may live
Our God alone, our God alone

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Who rose again
Death could not win
Our God alone, our God alone

Who is returning, bringing a Kingdom
Our God alone, our God alone

We will worship, we will worship
Our God alone, our God alone

We will worship, we will worship
Our God alone, our God alone

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Children Dismissed for Children’s Church

Sermon
“Steadfast… The Restorative Power of God’s Love”
Jonah 1:17 – 2:9

Prayer of Confession
Loving God and Father,
be merciful and forgive our sins.
You know us and have made us to be yours.
And you have loved us in Jesus,
who bled and died that we may live.
Wash away our pride and unbelief.
Turn us from sinful thoughts and deeds.
Give us willing spirits,
to love you and one another,
and to love this world that you created to be good.
Until Christ comes and makes all things new.
Through Jesus. Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

Lord I Need You
Lord I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without you, I fall apart
You’re the one that guides my heart

Lord, I need you, O I need you
Every hour I need you
My one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

Where sin runs deep, your grace is more
Where grace is found is where you are
And where you are Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord, I need you, O I need you
Every hour I need you
My one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

Teach my song to rise to you
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on you
Jesus, you’re my hope and stay

Lord, I need you, O I need you
Every hour I need you
My one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you

You’re my one defense, my righteousness
O God how I need you
